Sharon and I were invited to the Salon Internacional del Comic Principado de Asturias in Gijon, Spain, in October of 2000. I received two Haxtur Awards at the festival - for the best short story in 1999 (“Noodles”) and the best script in 2000 (Grasscutter). We had a wonderful time. Dear UY Letters Column, I really love Usagi Yojimbo. It’s one of my all-time favorite comic books and one of the inspirations for my own comic book idea. The reason I’m writing is that I really like the font in which the title of your letters column is printed. Can you tell me where I can get this font? Dear Stan Sakai, As a reader of Usagi since the beginning, I’m eagerly anticipating “The Duel at Kitanoji.” I’ve been patiently waiting for it ever since Nakamura Koji told Usagi to tell him to tell Katsuichi to meet him for a duel. Please, please, please don’t let Katsuichi die. He’s my very favorite character in Usagi (along with Jei, who will hopefully return soon, albeit in his reincarnated form). Is there any chance you night ever show sumo wrestlers in Usagi? Even if it’s just in the background? One I can remember is a mawashi-clad gambling bear in Fantagraphics’ Issue #20, I think (the kite festival story). I’m actually doing my best to learn Sumo at the moment (I’m ranked as a lowly 3rd Kyu). You can check out my instructor’s web site at www.sumo.org.uk. I recently picked up The Big Book of Sumo by Mina Hall, so chances are that sumotori will be showing up in a story. Incidentally, that gambling bear was wearing a loincloth called a fundoshi, common to peasants and the working class. |
