Story Synopsis

Usagi and Gen set out from Atsuta Shrine, after delivering the Grasscutter sword. Usagi sets course for the Kitanoji Temple; Gen decides to tag along. Usagi is questioned by a gate guard, who thinks he might have been involved in Toyofuku’s death (see The Courtesan.) The pair come upon a town and have a meal at the inn; when the bill comes, it turns out that that Gen gave all of his money to the priests of Atsuta Shrine! Usagi and Gen learn that the town is split between two rival bosses, Maeda and Joya. Both gangs treat the townspeople roughly, extorting and threatening. Usagi makes a sneaky proposal: The two ronin each pretend to join a gang, planning to manipulate the two gangs into destroying each other…although Gen takes the opportunity to make some money first.
