Dear Reader,
Trivia is often about the little things.
This week's trivia question is:
"Who is the smallest character in the world of Usagi Yojimbo?"
Please include the location of this smallest character (book number, page number etc...).
Best wishes to all!
go

ps. The winner's prize this week is a nice copy of Albedo number 3.
And you will be entered to win the July prize package................
"And the prize pack for July is going to be bigger and better than ever! Definitely something people won't want to miss out on!" jabba359

What do you consider a character? Spot, the tokage lizard, was a character. Does it have to have a speaking role like Ted the Bug from Bone?

Holy Smokes! A nice copy of Albedo 3 is worthy of the being the whole month prize by itself! Time to break out the tpb's and start combing through them!

Wow, this is hard. I hope it's one that has a speaking role, because otherwise it could just be something like a bug that shows up in one panel.

Dear Readers,

"What do you consider a character? Spot, the tokage lizard, was a character. "
Yes.

"Does it have to have a speaking role like Ted the Bug from Bone?"
No, but it wouldn't hurt.....(i love Ted and his brother)

"otherwise it could just be something like a bug that shows up in one panel."
If so then it must be time to find that panel!

TIme to get small!

Please enter as many times as you wish.
Best wishes to all.

Dear Readers,
Our winner so far is Gaffey:
"flies hovering above Usagi's fertilizer in Usagi's Garden, page 4, panel 1."
Perhaps smallest character is not about physical size ....
Thank you very much Gaffey for your entry.
Best wishes to all!
go

ps. Usagi-chan is thinking along the same lines as Gaffey: "I would say the flies flying around the pig in "A Quiet Meal", on the second page in the first panel and throughout the rest of the story (They're the ones that Usagi sliced and diced)."

Dear Readers,
Steve Hubbell writes:
"I guess I will give this a guess....

The Ninja fly on page 10 of UY Book 29 (200 Jizo) - last panel of the short stort "Stan Interviews Usagi part 2"."

Excellent!
Best wishes to all!

Dear Readers,
"Who is the smallest character in the world of Usagi Yojimbo?"
"Please include the location of this smallest character (book number, page number etc...)."
Unless Steve can prove his Ninja fly to be smaller that Gaffey's fly, i think Gaffey is still in first place.
"Perhaps smallest character is not about physical size ...."
Best wishes to all!

OK Go, heh, like you haven't heard that one before.

My guess: Usagi Gundam! Page 128 in Senso.

Peace, maka

Dear Readers,
Maka I am confused by your answer.
"OK Go, heh, like you haven't heard that one before." ?
and:
"My guess: Usagi Gundam! Page 128 in Senso."
Do you mean the Usagi Gundam or the apparent size of the person saying hello?
Trevis has a great idea with the cricket who actually has a speaking part.
However, i think Gaffey's fly is still the smallest so far.
So Gaffey is still in the lead.
I do not have an answer in my mind to this question.
I figure we will eventually agree on our answer.
Never give up.
Best wishes to all!

Fellow Dojo Shugyosha,

I don't have an answer, but I do have some thoughts.

First of which is, what defines a character?

To me, a character is someone, or something, that has a role in a story. A character has the capability of interacting in a way that would contribute or enhance the story. Thus, a soldier, a wayfarer, a farmer, a ninja, a maiko, a Yurai, Yokai, or Oni, all could be characters. However, a fly, a dragonfly, a cricket, a cicada, and even a tokage (except for Spot), would not be considered characters... they are more like supporting cast. However, by my own definition, there is a vast grey zone of cast members that could be considered either characters and/or supporting cast.

But there is something else.... several times, go has said, "Perhaps smallest character is not about physical size ...."

So, what does that mean? A character with a small part? How small? A one shot appearance? That could be numerous characters.

If I were to answer, I would go in one of two directions, both of which have been addressed already. One is the Ninja fly, since he is not just a fly, but a Ninja fly (and he laughs)... this makes him a very small character.

The other direction is similar to what go suggested that Maka was leading to, "...the apparent size of the person saying hello?" This may not be the first example of a 'small' character, but it is recent and obvious.... it is a character, but drawn to a 'small' scale in an illustration.

This is a simple, yet tricky challenge.

Good job go, you are making us think.

Thanks Go.

My guess was a joke, as you know. I was trying to think of the biggest character. :)

I already have albedo #3. I don't need another (And I still have to send you the Reads poster. Unfortunately/ fortunately I am on vacation camping trip with my family until Aug. so it will have to wait to then).

I can do the next contest. But I don't know if I will have cell service next Sunday (we might be in Canada). So if I don't declare a winner, be patient.

Peace, maka (in Idaho right now). :)
