Underrated Manga: The Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu

Postby Angelcake the Fox » Sun Dec 03, 2006 11:17 +0000

(Heh, haven't posted one of these in a while)

Horror manga is a unique genre in comics. Unique not only because of its art style, but because of the culture and content within. There are rarely rotting zombies, serial killers, or mummies involved. Most horror manga is psychological in nature, although the supernatural does play in alot......

....And the godfather of this genre, and a favorite mangaka for generations of young people, is Kazuo Umezu. And this particular manga is considered one of his best.

OK.....as usual, a bit of background info first.

Kazuo Umezu has been drawing manga for many many years, since the fifties. He first started drawing and publishing manga whilst he was in high school, and since then has been a favorite artists for over 40 years. His most commercially profitable creation is a rather vulgar gag manga called Makoto-chan, however it is his horror manga that he is more critically and internationally known for. This particular manga, The Drifting Classroom, is one of his more critically acclaimed works, combining the thriller, science fiction and psychological horror genres into a single brilliant work.

The story goes as such......

After a major earthquake hits the city, an entire elementary school-building, students and all- disappears off the face of the Earth, the only proof that it was ever there being a massive crater. As the people mourn the loss, the actualy school and people inside find themselves in a massive, nightmarish, post-apocalyptic wasteland. As the students and faculty slowly deteriorate into savages (much like those in Lord of the Flies), a young boy named Sho and his friends discover a frightening discovery......they are not in a nameless place.....they are on Earth......and not the present Earth either.....

The manga is currently being published by Viz Media, and three volumes have been released so far.

Please, give this one a try. It's an exciting piece of work that never lets up in the thrills department.

Read it and enjoy. :)
