Kickstarter: Osamu Tezuka's Unico

Dozens of volumes of manga by Osamu Tezuka have now come to American shores, many to great acclaim. The vast majority of them have been stories written for adults. Yet many of Tezuka's most famous characters in Japan appear in manga meant for children. We think it's unfortunate that so few of Tezuka's manga for kids are in print in English, so we set out to publish "Tezuka manga to read with your kids."

The obvious choice was Unico.

Unico is a little unicorn who possesses the magical power to help those who love him. His story begins in the Greece of mythology, with Tezuka's take on the story of Psyche. In his version, Unico brings great happiness to the mortal Psyche, who in return cares for him and loves him. But the goddess Venus is jealous of Psyche, tricking her and ordering Zephyrus, the West Wind, to kidnap and banish the unicorn to someplace far away after wiping his memory. Before Unico can spend too long in one place, Zephyrus returns to carry him away again.

I'm thrilled to see these Tezuka Kickstarters get so much support, especially since DM said that if this reaches its funding goal with enough time to spare, they would start a Kickstarter for another family-friendly Tezuka title soon!

I made a $45 pledge to the Unico Kickstarter, anyone else here supporting it? The idea of a full-color Tezuka manga in English makes me salivate a little bit. Also, it will be nice to have some of the more family-friendly Tezuka titles available in English to share with my nephew (who just turned 1 year old this past weekend) when he gets old enough to start reading comics (his uncle will definitely be eager to give him a good education in classic all-ages comics when he gets a little older!).

I am supporting it too! From the description it seems full color Tezuke comics are rare. Looking forward to reading this with the kids. Peace, make

Update #1: Stretch goal #1: ATOMCAT!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dig ... sts/254948

Our first stretch goal is ATOMCAT!

This is a family reboot of Astro Boy drawn by Tezuka in 1986-87, about a little boy who has a cat with Astro Boy's powers. It's adorable, fun, and has some great art and action! See the video for more info!

We're offering a PDF companion, stickers and a T-shirt just like with Unico, and if we can hit $26,000 we'll be releasing ATOMCAT in March 2013. To get it (and the other rewards) you just need to adjust your pledge. Either choose one of the new pledge levels, or simply add $12 to your current pledge to get a copy of ATOMCAT.

Here's how we'll be publishing it:

Paperback
Size: A5 (5.875"x8.25"), same as our other Tezuka releases
Pages: About 200
Retail price: $12.95

And if we can hit $26,000 with time to spare, we'll have ANOTHER great family Tezuka title too! This one is a real doozy... we can't wait!

NOTE: Even though we just added these rewards Kickstarter mixed them in with the Unico ones. The Unico rewards do NOT include ATOMCAT (even if they say "includes previous rewards"). The $45 pledge includes only the Unico book, the Unico PDF/stickers and the $5 reward. To get ATOMCAT you must choose a reward that says ATOMCAT in the name. Sorry for the confusion!

Thanks again for your support!

I just increased my pledge to $67 to include this. It sounds like this will be another good one to share with kids/nieces/nephews.

Update #2: Stretch goal #2: Triton of the Sea!
Posted 1 minute ago

Wow! We've hit $26,000, and I'm really excited to say we're publishing ATOMCAT! Thanks, everyone.

As promised, it's time to announce our second stretch goal...

I told you it was a crazy one.

Triton is one of Tezuka's best-known works in Japan. It's aimed at an audience that's a little older than our other two books, but it's still very appropriate for older children, and we think grown-ups will love it too.

It's the story of Triton, a boy living in modern Japan who discovers he is the last survivor of the destruction of Atlantis by the god Poseidon. With his dolphin comrades by his side once again, he goes on a quest to avenge his family and, more importantly, begin to understand where he came from.

Triton is full of adventure, action, tragedy, humor and romance at sea. It was first published from 1969-1971, and got an anime adaptation directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino (the creator of "Mobile Suit Gundam"). We're thrilled that we have the chance to bring it Stateside at last.

Here are the details:

Paperback
Size: A5 (5.875"x8.25"), same as our other Tezuka releases
Pages: 488+440
Release dates: June 2013/August 2013
MSRP: $19.95 per volume

Yes, this is a two-volume series. And the goal we have to hit to publish it in its entirety is: $47,000.

Since this goal is so much higher, we'll be doing things a bit differently. If we hit $47,000, anyone who pledges $50 or more will receive Vol. 1, and anyone who pledges $100 or more will receive both volumes. More rewards will be added soon, but if you just want the books, you won't have to do anything if you're already pledging at high enough levels!

If we can get Triton, we'll have four Tezuka books to release to you over the next year. Think of it as a Tezuka subscription plan!

Thanks for your support! And if you're at Anime Expo today, come see us at the Akadot booth, #1330. We'll be making a video to post here!

Some translated sample pages of Triton of the Sea are now up; I really hope that this campaign raises the additional $11,000 needed to meet the Triton stretch goal within the next week!

One more update: apparently DM is going to release Triton whether or not the current Kickstarter reaches the $47,000 mark. If it doesn't, any money above the Unico and Atomcat goals will go toward Triton and there will be another Kickstarter later this year to pick up the rest of the money. In any case, people who support the current Kickstarter at levels for which one of the rewards is a copy of Triton V. 1 or V. 1 V. 2 will receive them when they come out whether or not they support the additional Triton Kickstarter.
