Thanks everybody! I'm glad you like them and I'm incredibly grateful to get such fantastic sketches in my books. I can't help but grin like an idiot as I look at them.

Today I managed to make it home during daylight hours, so got a picture of my Gallery Edition 2. The prior day, Stan had done a Tomoe tea ceremony piece that he posted on Facebook that I thought was great, so Stan did a sort of companion piece for me: a tea ceremony Usagi.

Both Stan and Julie also signed my Peanuts book with little sketches.

The sketches were fun and I had a great time talking to Stan, Julie, and Daniel. It's nice to see them at these small shows where we have time to talk without a big line of people waiting behind me.

Time to update with some more recent pieces:

Jei by Randy Clute
11x17 ink and watercolor

Usagi and Jotaro vs Groo and Rufferto by Randy Clute
11x17 pencil and ink

Image

I received both of these late last year as prizes from forum member Randy Clute, who was super generous with his art skills. The Groo piece was a pre-done prize while the Jei was the character I picked for a different contest prize. I don't have much Jei, so I thought it would be fun to add him to my art. There are also fun Usagi-verse rough pencil sketches on the reverse of the art. I always enjoy it when there's a little bonus on the backs! Thanks again Randy!

Usagi Yojimbo by Jonathan Marks
8.5x11.5 ink and watercolor

Image

You may recognize Jonathan's name from The Sakai Project, or perhaps from the fantastic Gen piece he did for me a couple years back. Jonathan was taking commissions this past month with all the proceeds donated to the ACLU. Being the fan I am of his work, I knew that I needed to get an Usagi piece to go with my Gen. Once again, after completing the art, I met Jonathan at the local comic shop to pick it up from him, as he lives here in town. Since he recently wrapped up some contract work with Marvel, he's currently working on his own book with some friends, so I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Usagi Yojimbo by Todd Nauck
9x12 ink and copics

Image

Todd is a pretty well known name (and another contributor to The Sakai Project) and this was a commission a long time in coming. For those that don't know, Todd's commission slots at conventions generally disappear within minutes of opening. I've tried no less than a dozen times to be one of the first few people to his table at several conventions each year for the past two years, but only succeeded in being in line early enough on one occasion. That occasion, however, was for a Sunday and I was the last one he'd take, but due to time constraints he only had time for a black and white headshot for that last slot. Wanting a half body, color commission and knowing that Todd attends several shows that I attend, I figured I'd have ample opportunity to get what I really wanted and let the guy behind me have that last spot instead. This weekend, however, Todd moved his commission booking online and this was his first show doing it this way. I didn't get on the list for day one, but that evening I managed to get on the list for the second day. Mission accomplished! Of course, Todd did a fantastic job and it was worth all the effort to get this done. I'm extremely happy with it.

I always liked Todd's work. I've never met him, but I was able to set up a couple of sketch card commissions many moons ago.

11.75x16.75 digitally colored print

Just received this commission from my friend Dom over in England, who I met on a YouTube live stream chat where I'm occasionally a guest on the channel (SketchCraft). I got the original line work as well as a digitally colored print.

Added a couple new pieces to the collection recently.

Usagi and Stan by Randy Clute
11x17 pencil and ink
Image

I think we all know Randy by now, as he is an active member of this forum. This piece was a gift from a friend and I love how Randy used a different style for Usagi's "painting". It was quite the pleasant surprise when it showed up and I think it's fun to see a "modern" Usagi.

TMNT/Usagi crossover cover by David Petersen
11x17 ink
Image

I've long wanted to get an original piece of David's art and like his Turtles in Time covers, but when I first saw this cover which combines his art with Usagi, I really wanted to own this piece. I emailed him about buying it, but he had already received a few other inquiries and told me that to make it fair, he would post it on the day the comic came out and it would be first come, first served.

When the release date got pushed back to after SDCC, I decided not to buy any original art at the show (the first time I haven't bought any), not knowing how much the cover would cost and hoping that I could both afford it and be lucky enough to see it before any other potential buyers bought it. I noticed that David usually announced the new art availability on Twitter, so I installed the app on my phone and set up notifications for any time he posted. Fortunately, the Wednesday that the comic came out was a work prep day, so I had the luxury of having my laptop open next to me, with the Mouse Guard store loaded up, while I worked. So when the notification went live, I was quickly refreshed the page and clicked the buy button! I probably completed my purchase within a minute or so of it becoming available. Whew! I still can't believe I managed to get such an incredible piece and is the first cover art I've ever bought.

Congrats! Love Randy's piece.
And Petersen cover is great. I connected to his website about 15 minutes after it was posted online, but it was already gone. :P
