Upping the ante on an annual SDCC tradition, IDW Publishing will host TWO industry legends – Stan Sakai (creator of the critically acclaimed Usagi Yojimbo) and Walter Simonson (legendary writer/artist of The Mighty Thor, Manhunter, and Ragnarök) for one very special dinner to which YOU are invited!

Mingle with both Sakai and Simonson on the evening of Thursday, July 18th in an event strictly limited to a handful of attendees, taking place in a private room at an upscale restaurant in the San Diego Gaslamp district, just a short walk from the convention center.

To participate, fans would need to purchase a dinner package. IDW offers two (2) dinner packages, with each package including special rewards relative to either Sakai or Simonson. Or – for the hardcore comics enthusiast – BOTH packages can be purchased! (Each package is $500).

ORIGINAL ART
Regarding original artwork, the diners will receive the illustrations featuring the character of their choice (as drawn by either Simonson or Sakai, respectively — note, Walter will draw any character, Stan any Usagi-related character), at the dinner event. The character must be selected by each confirmed guest within 24 hours of purchase to ensure readiness.

CREATOR BIOS
Stan Sakai began his comic book career by lettering, starting with Groo for Sergio Aragonés. His work led him to meet Stan Lee, who asked him to letter for Spider-Man Sunday comics, which he did for 25 years. Sakai is most famous for his original creation of Usagi Yojimbo, an epic saga celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2019 and featuring Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan. His work on Usagi has led to multiple awards, including several Eisner Awards, the Harvey Award for Best Cartoonist, the Parent’s Choice Award, and multiple Young Library Association Awards. Skillful weaving of facts, legends, and Japanese culture into his work has made Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo a favorite among educators as a curriculum tool. Since then, Usagi has been featured on television with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and has been consistently named as one of the top 100 comic book characters of all time. A TV show is currently in the works, produced by Gaumont Studios, Sakai, James Wan’s Atomic Monster, and Dark Horse Entertainment. Stan also loves to travel with his wife Julie, cook, and play with his three dogs, Ani, Momo, and Mika.

Walter Simonson has written and drawn nearly every major character from both Marvel and DC Comics over the course of his career, with his run on Marvel’s Thor from 1983 to 1987 — in which he created the character Beta Ray Bill — being a particular standout. His other notable works include an adaptation of Alien, with his Manhunter collaborator and close friend, Archie Goodwin; Star Wars; The Fantastic Four; and Orion and Elric. In the 1980s and 1990s Simonson resurrected the concepts from his college thesis, creating the Star Slammers original graphic novel and miniseries. In 2014, Simonson launched Ragnarök with IDW Publishing, a creator-owned series that once again brings him back to his beloved Norse mythology.

I wonder what the "special rewards" are for the Sakai package? In years past, they've listed those up front.

Isn't this the dinner where you get the special Grasscutter hardcover? Even though I'm not much of a mingler, $500 for both packages sounds like a good deal to me. Have you ever waited in a Simonson line?

EDIT: Oops, I read that wrong. I thought it was $500 for both.

An amazing opportunity! This would be a once in a lifetime event.
Can’t wait to hear about it and see the character drawings and all the special rewards. If any dojo members are able to go. I hope you have a great time!

Well, as much as I'd like a print, I think at $1000 I'll settle for the $20 lithograph instead. 8)

I did a year or two ago to get my Sakai Project signed. I got there about 20 minutes before the signing and was one of the first 10 in line, so it wasn't too bad. Maybe everybody was over at the HBO booth trying to catch a glimpse of the Game of Thrones cast or something?

It wasn’t me.

But that’s probably not that bad of a price. It is much more rare than the one that is commercially available and it is only available to those were willing to pay $250 or $500 for the dinner. The $500 looks like the best deal because the quality of Stan’s commissions are wonderful. The book is $150 (regular, not the gold stamp version you get at the dinner), commissions start at $300, and dinner is $?!?!, hanging out with Stan and Walter $priceless) I’m not going but I know at least three fine dojo members who are.

Peace, maka

I emailed the seller and asked a bunch of questions before I found out the standard edition would be sold at SDCC. I was considering it only because of the initial question mark about it being available or not at SDCC. The seller told me he was keeping the original drawing but would sell the book and throw in any freebies that were associated with the HC. Sent me a pic of his ticket to prove it was a legit item because he wanted paid prior to the dinner.

I apologize if I missed it I’m another thread, but when are the Grasscutter hardcovers going to be sold to the public?

No idea, but they're selling them at the IDW booth here at SDCC.

I was considering what was a fair offer to make and once I decided and went back to make the offer it was gone. I should have just hit the buy-it-now.

If you won the book congrats. It looks beautiful.

Another Gold foil Grasscutter sold on eBay for $250. I was very tempted, but I'm holding out hope for one of the APs with a sketch. We'll see if I regret it in a month or two.
