Underrated Manga: Appleseed

At one time, everybody knew about Masamune Shirow's utopian cyberpunk masterpiece. Sadly, due to a lacking of regular installments, a falling behind in Shirow's output.....and not to mention a rather disappointing CGI anime in 2004, this work has fallen on some hard times..... It's sad to. Because A...

Ah, yes. Who can forget Fritz the Cat?

I've always wondered, was Shintaru Katsu, the actor who played Zatoichi, was he really blind?, or just a really good actor? His blindness was an act. Katsu starred in another series called Hanzo the Blade, about a Edo era detective. This was based on a gekiga (adult manga) by Kazuo Koike of Lone Wo...

I've just begun buying the original manga that Dragon Ball was based on.

Believe it or not, I find the manga versions of DragonBall and Dragon BAll Z far more enternating thatn the anime.

You're not alone, Stan. I can't count the number of times I've read in Viz's Shonen Jump how Toriyama "didn't like the way that Dragon Ball turned out" and how "he was glad when he finished it". Oh, and in case you're intrested, Dr. Slump is now being published in the states via ...

I especially like Neko Majin Z.

Quite frankly, anyone who can make fun of their own popularity is not only a genius, but has great control over there own ego.

Space Usagi comes to mind. :)

Akira Toriyama: Much more than Dragon Ball

Akira Toriyama has got to be the luckiest man on Earth. He's the creator of a popular franchise, he's the most famous manga-ka outside of Japan, he gets big fat royalty checks every year.......and he's barely drawn any manga in over 10 years!!! I love Akira Toriyama. Next to Johji Manabe, CLAMP, and...

Oh, I know. I just wanted to point it out. :) And don't worry about my "spoiler". Lyre's death is not the most important death in the film. There's alot of other deaths in the film that are far more important. Lyre's death is only a side-arm to the overall plot. Oh, there's a cool Kimba fa...

Actually, believe it or not, Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend is considered a classic in anime and manga. It's actually the only work that Maeda created that's not only well written, but actually very deep. That is, if you can get past the EXTEMELY explicity violence and sex. Like I said, his w...

No, Disney ripped it off from them! Matter of fact, they so blatantly plagarized Tezuka's work that its actually quite embarassing for Disney fans everywhere. Disney actually used cels from the original Kimba cartoon in order to use for "reference" in making the Lion King. All one needs to...

Underrated Anime, Part 2: Tezuka Osamu's Jungle Emperor Leo

OMG, what can I say that's bad about this film? NOTHING! Not a single thing. It's superb in every way an animated film can be. It has love, passion, good vs evil, and a relevant moral that everyone can understand. This is, of course, based on Osamu Tezuka's epic Kimba the White Lion saga. For contin...

A question for Stan (or anyone else who can help me)

I was reading through one of my old fantagraphics graphic novels (vol. 3) when I came across somehting that I previously hadn't come across before in Chap 5. For those of you who don't know, in Vol. 3 the chapter 5 story is "The Tea Cup", in which Gen and Usagi have to safely deliver a sac...

Ooops...my computer crashed before I got to finsih the message. I meant to say that, although she said he looked like a sweet guy on the outside, she said that he acted and looked at her in ways that made her somewhat uncomfortable. He is a very talented artist though. I'm sure you've probably seen ...

Thanks Todd. I was definently worried there for a second. However, I felt a deep responisibility to get this information out. I want to say this again, I am not a prude. I have no moral resistance to any kind of x-rated anime (or hentai, as its called). However, I wanted to point it out to all of th...
