This is just too hard, Stan has created so many trully great and interesting characters to try and choose just five of them as the best. I had to concider my answer for a couple days before posting it.
1. Gen
(Always has been my favorite, right from the start)
2. Chizu, formerly of the Neko Ninja
(I love the effect she always seems to have on Usagi)
3. Inspector Ishida
(A character who could easily hold down his own series)
4. Sasuke the Demon Queller
(Another character who could easily star in his own series)
5. Oyama Tadanori, Lord of the Owls
(Such a mysterious character, can't wait 'til he shows up again)
I had to throw in an unusual character just to be difficult.

It seems like just about everyone is in at this point, though Dojo members are still welcome to add their votes until Wednesday. By then, the poll will have been open for a full week.
I'm surprised to see Chizu ranking at #2, as well as Sasuke (a relatively new character) tying with Tomoe (a permanant fixture in Usagi's stories) at #4. I really thought Jei and Inazuma would rank higher, and I think Noriko will become more of a fan favorite as we get to see more of her (tpb readers don't even know who she is yet). Everything else came out pretty close to what I'd expected.
Dojo members, feel free to share your thoughts on the outcomes, as well.
And Stan, would you be willing to contribute your own top 5 (not to be counted in the votes)? I think we'd all be very curious to know.

Well....
1: Gennosuke (I see alot of myself in this character. The Lady Asano storyline is still one of my favorites)
2: Classic Wolf Jei, (Im still hoping that he will come back.)
3: Lord Hebi (Great Heroes need Great Villains)
4: Kitsune (I always liked the Gen/Kitsune relationship)
5: Shubo (I really loved this char. RIP)

I am surprised by Sasuke, but not by Chizu. As the only regular Kunoichi in UY, and an awesome character in her own right (not to mention a Neko Ninja and brother of Shingen, one of the coolest characters ever to appear in the comic), she's been around almost as long as Tomoe and Mariko themselves.
A side note on Chizu (and Stan will have to confirm since it was so many years ago), but I may have inadvertently saved her life. I was meeting Stan at Gary's Corner Bookstore about 8 years ago or so, right around the time when we were doing the first UY t-shirt. I did a video interview of Stan at Gary's (which I NEED to get on this site one day). After the interview, Stan and I were talking about Grasscutter and an upcoming Chizu story arc, which would later become Grasscutter 2. After Stan told me Chizu gets run down pretty hard in the storyline, I told him that he'd better not kill her off... he turned to me and said, "hmm, I'd better change the ending to that storyline then!" And who do we have dying in that story instead...another Kunoichi named Saru... Fortunately Chizu did not have to share the same fate as her bro (which STILL gets to me to this day!!). So Stan, was it your original intent to kill Chizu off??? I don't think I ever followed up on that (or maybe I did and forgot..getting senile in my old age)

Who could not like this????

I never really latched onto Chizu, and I'm not sure why. I guess I've always felt that if she had that much problem with the restraints of being a ninja, than she should have left (or at least stepped down as leader). Even if the clan wouldn't allow her out, she still could have escaped if it was that important to her. It annoyed me to watch her dig her own grave with Hebi, as well as to see her complete inability to detect blatant disloyalty in her second in command. It bothered me to watch her demonstrate weakness in front of her clan members, just because she longed to love someone herself (I agree with her actions in that situation, but they shouldn't have been so transparent to everyone else). Though her ideals are praiseworthy, she makes some very careless decisions (or lackthereof). The fact that she's the ninja with the heart of gold just isn't enough for me.
I think the fact that she's now forced to lie in the bed she made will leave her with more opportunity to develop as a noble and sympathetic character for me, though. It's hard not to care for a character that's lost everything and is forced to start again from scratch.
Incidentally, I'm closing the polls tonight. Get your votes in before midnight.
