Working out a rough composition for a possible Usagi Yojimbo submission to The Sakai Project. To find out more about the project, which is intended to raise funds for the sick wife of Usagi Yojimbo's creator, Stan Sakai, please check out the story here: http://comicsalliance.com/the-sakai-pro ... se-comics/

Hi, Thanks for your interest in the piece. I hope it turns out how I see it in my head. I only have a few more days to get it right and submit it.

As for how I'm doing it: The characters were sketched the old fashioned way, 2b pencil on paper. I one sketch of Gen's head and upper body, another of Gen's entire body to get a decent pose, one main sketch of Usagi and then a few sketches of extras, like the banner for Usagi's back.

I then scanned those pieces in and assembled and edited the composition in Photoshop. The shading and color "flavoring" was also done in Photoshop, just to give myself a guide in terms of where I'm thinking of taking the final piece.

Then I printed the characters out, taped the image to the back of a piece of 11x14 bristol paper, and am now in the process of inking the final image using a light box and mainly brush pens.

Hope that makes sense. I hope to finish all the inking this weekend.

Take care!
Tim

I think it needs some more arrows. And maybe some throwing stars.

Today's inking tool of choice: an old toothbrush and India Ink.

These days, a lot of the inking and effects can be achieved using the computer, and I probably would finish this piece that way on any given day. But, since I'm donating the actual artwork to the Sakai auction, I wanted to do as much as possible the old fashioned way on the physical piece.[/quote]

Here are my finished inks of Usagi Yojimbo I'm submitting to The Sakai Project. It's an art book in the works by Dark Horse Comics celebrating the 30th anniversary of Stan Sakai's samurai rabbit character. All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and his wife Sharon, who has been battling a long term illness. No word yet on if I'll make it into the publication, but I am also donating the original art to an auction also in their benefit. One of my goals was to do all the work physically on the paper. So much of what I do is done digitally. Not a complaint. Just how a lot of work is done these days. A lot of the shading could have been done in the computer, but I wanted to do everything with my mitts for this. A lot of good old elbow grease. Brush pens, India ink, straight edges, French curves, white paint, a lot of multiple hand cut masking for the effects inks (done with an old toothbrush for grainy but controlled spatter, kind of like how cave men painted their cave walls.) and gray sky and sun (created with gray spray paint. Hillbilly airbrush).
