My contribution to The Sakai Project! It was super fun to get a chance to draw Usagi in action!! I first came across the samurai rabbit when I bought Albedo Anthropomorphics #4 way back in 1985 when I was super into the B&W TMNT comics. The original artwork is going up for auction to help support Stan Sakai and his family who are going through some rough times.

Just got started on the piece I am doing for the auction in honor of Stan Sakai and his wife, Sharon. I'm so late getting started. They have had some really great art sent in. This is my very humble piece. I've sketched the art onto the 3d surface in Zbrush and will now attempt to sculpt the bas relief for a pendant I will have 3d printed. I pray I get this right. I so want this to turn out well.

Cris Palomino wrote: January 31, 2014
Blocking in the forms, I'm using a metal material in ZBrush which gives me a good indication of my heights and details.

Some minor changes that make me feel better about the piece. Tomorrow I talk to my friend who is assisting with the 3D printing to see what he needs from me and get this going on that end. Yay!

He probably used a Frank Frazetta image as inspiration, for which it would be appropriate to sign it "Queen after Frazetta" or some variation of that. It just acknowledges the source.

This commanding portrait of Iron Man comes courtesy of Ernie Stiner, past penciler on such books as "Silver Surfer", "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.", and "G.I. Joe". The black and white image is Ernie's original ink, and the colored one was hand colored with markers on a print of the line art, all for the benefit of the Sakais!

***Looking forward to the Dark Horse Usagi hardcover book to help Stan Sakai take care of his wife Sharon. The family has suffered tragic loss and crises at every corner, and my prayers continue to be with them. Not an industry pro or much of an artist compared to such, but I did a Usagi drawing to pay my respects to one of the most talented, kindest individuals to grace the medium.

He is coloring it digitally for inclusion in our Usagi tribute book coming this summer from Dark Horse Comics. Hailing from Spain, Oscar is well known in Europe for his comics of "Tom & Jerry", Disney comics, and his own creation of "Solo". He is a master with energetic layouts and character work. What a great splash page from Rob Liefeld’s Extreme Studios’ “Bloodstrike” comic published by Image. This is page 11 from the 9th issue of this 1994 comic and was penciled by Richard Horie (“Youngblood”, “Supreme”) and inked by Tim Townsend (“Wolverine & the X-Men”). We are grateful that this sweet original piece has been donated to CAPS to help raise funds for Sharon & Stan Sakai! Well, here it is. I think I will add some work on the blades so they can be seen better.

Hey, All! While Portland was smothered in snow this weekend, I crafted a Usagi Yojimbo tribute for an art auction fundraiser for creator Stan Sakai & his wife Sharon. Please, look into details here: <http://garageartstudio.blogspot.com/201 ... sakai.html>
and here: <http://www.darkhorse.com/Blog/1581/dark ... ai-project>
Thanks!
From the blog of graphic novelist Craig Thompson
February 9th, 2014

The Sakai Project:
One of my favorite comics growing up was USAGI YOJIMBO. Its creator Stan Sakai is humble, hardworking, and perhaps the kindest person I’ve met in this industry. His wife has been suffering serious health issues, so an art auction fundraiser has been organized to aid the family with medical expenses.

Image

Here’s my tribute – crafted this snowbound weekend in Portland. The inspiration was 1) the unrequited romance of Usagi & Mariko from the earliest 1987 issues of the book, along with 2) the tradition of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints (specifically “Two ladies conversing in the snow” & “A village in the snow” by Hiroshige), and finally 3) the snow-dappled tree framed by my studio window as the neighbor kids sled down their front yard.

Image

To learn more about the fundraiser and the other artists involved, please check out the Cartoon Art Professional Society’s Paypal.

The work will also be colored by the amazing Dave Stewart and see print in THE SAKAI PROJECT book to be published by Dark Horse and Bongo Comics (July 23rd release).
