TNMT in Usagi?

Post by Aoki Batetsu »

First up, please, don't bash the n00b for asking silly questions (not that I expect you to, but I've tried it before).

I was just wondering if the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were ever in the Usagi Yojimbo comic. I know it's been the other way around.
It's just that some friends of mine spoke of the TNMT having been in UY and that in this particular comic, the TNMT were rather cruel and really badass.
So I'm just wondering if it was ever that way?

Thank you.

Yes, the TMNT were in the Usagi comic, at least twice that I can recall off hand. Once in UY Vol. 1 #10 ("The Crossing" by Peter Laird, where Usagi meets up again with Leonardo -- the first time they met was in Turtle Soup Vol 1 #1 by Mirage; the 3rd time in Shell Shock -- both by Stan). Then the TMNT appeared in a 3-issue story arc in UY Vol 2 #1-3, when Usagi was published in color by Mirage. After that, they have yet to appear in any additional UY comics.

What would have been REALLY cool and something of a childhood fantasy for me was a joint TMNT/Usagi crossover by Eastman, Laird, and Stan (the same way the TMNT met Cerebus in TMNT Vol. 1 #8 ) -- where Stan draws Usagi & Co. and Eastman & Laird draw the TMNT. Would have been really cool!

Hmmm...how can I get my hands on all those comics?

You see, I live in Denmark and all I capable of getting here is the books, Usagi Yojimbo Book 1, 2, 3 and so on, not just the magazines.

So, any links?

If you want me to I can check which is the book that features the TMNT once I am back home.

Get book 8 Shades of Death. These are the Mirage Usagi stories, and the first three issues were the Turtles and Usagi.

Cynthia, butting in.

You can order UY Vol 1 #10 direct from Fantagraphics for $2.00 right now!!! Amazing that this issue is still in print. They must have reprinted it to appease the millions of TMNT fans out there :) Go to http://www.fantagraphics.com Features a cover by Stan with Usagi attacking Leo.

UY Book Three has the Turtle Soup story, while the Hardcover Edition of UY Book 6 (not the softcover!!) has "The Treaty" from Shell Shock. Book 6 hardcover is currently out of print, so you'll need to do some hunting! Good luck trying to get the original Turtle Soup and Shell Shock issues -- try eBay.

Cynlee is right that UY Book 8 has the 3-part Shades of Green arc, but these were reprinted in black-and-white (which looks better actually). To get the color ones, you'll have to search comic shops or eBay. Not even Mirage has these ones.

You may try browsing through some of the UY Marketplace sellers at: http://usagiyojimbo.com/buy.html

The current UY Concordance is in serious need of some updating, but here is the old one:

I think the color ones are nicer.

Mirage is sold out of the first three, but I got my three copies from lonestar comics-- www.mycomicshop.com, and they ship overseas, and if it's out of stock, they will try to find it for you.

Butting in again.

If you are looking for the color Usagi, you could order most of them from Mirage Studios-- www.ninjaturtles.com-- but they don't have the color Usagi/Turtle cross-over.

Don't worry Aoki, about bashing noobs here, it doesn't happen thankfully. The audience that Stan Sakai generates, are better understanding. I've said it before and I'll repeat it here, this is the best message boards out there on the internet. Conflict between participants here, at least since I joined last year are null and void. They just don't seem to exist here.

After all, I believe Usagi Yojimbo can generate a polite crowd of people. There is consistancy with Usagi fans I've noticed.
