I haven't noticed any trend in "darker" stories recently myself, but looking back I supposed one could draw that conclusion...sort of. What about UY 100? And certainly several of the Tomoe issues following "Mother" were more lighthearted in nature (Tomoe meets Kitsune a major example; and Chanoyu). It certainly hasn't impacted the pacing or the enjoyment of the book though. In fact, I've always preferred the more serious, mature, and death-ridden stories myself
, but I honestly haven't noticed a trend towards darker stories, even though Stan said in a previous post that a more grim tone was "deliberate".

UY 100 was set in its own unique reality outside of the regular continuity, and doesn't really count. (I definitely wish I lived there. Meeting Usagi in person would be a hoot and a half.
)
But you do have a good point, Todd. I didn't re-enter the world of Usagi until #97, so I missed out on the Usagi/Tomoe issues.
