General discussion about Usagi Yojimbo, the comics, the stories, the characters, collectibles, TV appearances, Stan Sakai, Space Usagi, Nilson & Hermy, and all other related topics.
Heritage Auctions will be selling a few of my pieces in November. Albedo #2, the first appearance of Usagi Yojimbo is the first item to be posted. There will also be the original wraparound covers for UY Senso for the first three issues and the watercolor cover for UY Book 28: Red Scorpion. Here is the link to Heritage Auctions. Just search for Albedo #2. You may have to register to see it, though.
I am continuing to sign the UY Saga Book 2 HC tip-in plates. I always sign one plate with a full page drawing on its reverse side, a little surprise for one lucky reader. I actually got the drawing for UY Book 28, and sold the book to a friend at cover price.
Watching Cat Ballou, with Lee Marvin's Oscar winning performance as Kid Shelleen. My favorite characters, though, are Stubby Kaye as Professor Sam the Shade and Nat King Cole as The Sunrise Kid, the two minstrels.
My favorite Stubby Kaye moment, however, is in another movie--Marryin' Sam in Li'l Abner:
Heritage Auctions has posted my covers for bidding. They have very generously waived their commission so that I will received the entire sum to help with Sharon's health care.
For auction are: the watercolor cover for UY Book 28: Red Scorpion (they even showed the flip side where I usually write the details of my paintings) and the oversize wraparound covers for Senso 1, 2, and 3. My copy of Albedo #2, Usagi's first appearance, is up there as well. That one will end in a few days.
This is the flip side of the cover art. I usually write the description of my watercolors pieces here.
UY: Senso #1
UY: Senso #2 cover
UY: Senso #3 cover

Just search for "Stan Sakai" or "Albedo #2".
As many of you know, I do not sell published story pages and usually sell covers and other art only at conventions.

It is rare to be able to buy any of Stan Sakai's art unless you see him in person. Also to be able to buy the first appearance of Usagi Yojimbo in Albedo #2 from Stan's personal collection is rare. Finally all money raised from this auction goes directly to the Sakai family. Heritage Auctions is waving the auction fees to support the Sakais. I hope these auctions raise a ton of money.
The benefit auction for good buddy Clydene Nee of the San Diego Comic-con will be starting soon. I, and so many others, have donated items. We will keep you updated.

Benefit eBay Auction for Clydene Nee Update
I got some really nice art donations for the eBay Auction. The Good News is I am hiring someone to run this for me. My health is too bad right now with my mounting fatigue to run the auction myself. It is just too much work for me. I hope you all will understand. I plan to meet with this person in the coming two weeks so we can get this party started.
I got some Great Donations from Stan Sakai, Whilce Portacio, Agnes Garbowska, Monte Michael Moore, Denise Vasquez. Tribute To Tony DeZuniga., Ramona Fradon, Theresa Mather, Mark Brooks and many many many others.

Thank you for sharing your stuffed cabbage recipe, Janice Chiang! I made a few changes to it, but it turned out great!
Before the big cabbage leaves were put on top and it went into the oven.

Gorgeous dish, Stan! : )
Janice--it took a lot longer than I thought. The hardest part was peeling off the big cabbage leaves without tearing them. I now have two small heads of cabbage, after removing the outer leaves. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of okominoyaki or cole slaw.
Janice Chiang wrote:
Stan : : I would make coleslaw with the remainder of the cabbage and pair it with Mahogany Fried Chicken. For the buttermilk marinade, I usually add 4 large cloves of garlic minced, juice from one like, one large jalapeno pepper, and fresh cilantro in addition to the Tabasco sauce. Use an immersion blender to break down garlic, cilantro, and jalapeño. We call this mixture "fried chicken milkshake." I leave the chicken pieces to marinate overnight. For the flour coating, I use less salt. Oh, yes, potato salad and fresh lemonade with lemon zest, too. http://www.marthastewart.com/330195/mah ... ed-chicken
Thank you, Janice. That sounds so good.

Stan Sakai Usagi Yojimbo is back in Lucca comics!!! A Real cool edition!!! Yeah!!!!
Stan Sakai wrote:
Wonderful! Is that the really big book? It was published in the US by Fantagraphics. Dark Horse has started their own series of omnibus editions similar to Fantagraphics'. I hope the Italian publisher translates that as well.
Look! They are very massive and cool! A very good edition
Schau mal Frank Graphics was ich heute endlich bekommen habe!
Trout is on sale at Sprouts this week, so I made trout almandine, with sweet & spicy roasted butternut squash.
I am still signing those tip-in signature plates for the Usagi Yojimbo Saga Book 2. The signed/numbered hardcover is an edition of 1500 which means I have got to sign (and sketch) 1650 plates to accommodate Artist Proofs, Publisher Proofs and account for damaged books.
Here is the recipe for the squash. Thank you, Mrs. G's:
I'm finishing up signing the last 250 (of 1650) tip-in plates for the UY Saga Book 2 limited edition hardcover and watching a Charlie Chan marathon on DVD. I'm always surprised at how many films are in this series (and that's not counting "The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan").
I love his pearls of wisdom: "Even bagpipe not speak with empty stomach."
Or the dialogue:
Man: What you need is a lie detector.
CC: "Lie detector?"
Man: It is something that can tell instantly when a man is lying.
CC: You mean "wife". I already have one.

Envy you for getting to watch those Charlie Chans. Haven't seen them since late night TV in the 1970s, possibly even with my first use of cable (in Virginia). All I can recall is that Keye Luke was #1 Son, he who later became the villain on almost all the Saturday morning Hanna-Barbera superhero cartoons and later still Master Po on Kung Fu.
Tim--I'm watching Charlie Chan in Paris with Warner Oland (my favorite Chan) right now. That was Keye Luke's first turn as Number One Son. He later went on to play Charlie Chan (at least his voice) in the aforementioned Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan. He was also Kato in the very old Green Hornet serials.

$4,033.13
By the way, the bids for an original water color cover and the wrap covers for Senso 1-3 are ridiculously low. Of course these auctions don't end until Nov. 20th.

Good luck!
Peace, maka
Sshhhhh! Don't tell everyone how cheap they are right now!
I should note that even then, this is only an absentee bid auction. The "winners" of the cover auctions then have their bids used as the opening bids in the real, live, in-person auction the day after the online auction closes. If no one present at the real auction overbids, the internet bidder wins the piece in question. If someone does, then that's that, it goes to the highest bidder present at the real auction.
