Spoofs <Not Usagi related>

Sorry! This question is not Usagi related. I was just wondering...
Do spoofs generally follow the same story line as what they're making fun of? (And no, I'm not going to spoof Usagi. I just can't find enough to make fun of, unless you want to go over the Furries business, and that gets old after a while...)

To my knowledge spoofs can be of a storyline or an entire series, or both. TMNT was originally a spoof, or parody, of Frank Miller's Ronin, even though it didn't have the same story elements. Likewise, there was a western movie (the title escapes me at the moment) that was a story spoof of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (almost scene-by scene as I recall). For the most part when the term "spoof" is used, it generally refers to a series, with possibly some of the same story elements.

Are you referring to
The Magnificent Seven with Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen? I always considered a spoof to be something that pokes fun at the original. Did I miss something?

With much trepidation, I must agree with the Shugyosha, Shogun-sama.
spoof n.
1. Nonsense; tomfoolery.
2. A hoax.
3. A gentle satirical imitation; a light parody.
Thus, the Magnificent Seven should be seen as at best, a tribute to Kurosawa, at worst, a pale imitation. (Depending on what critique you read. Kurasawa himself was not happy with the gunslinger analogy, he preferred to see samurai as more akin to knights.)

I stand corrected!
Magnificent Seven vs The Seven Samurai

The Seven Samurai has to be one of my all time favorite movies. I am pleased that someone would feel inspired to base a movie off of SS, but I can't help thinking the movie falls drastically short of Kurosawa's, then again I am not a big fan of westerns either. Perhaps The Magnificent Seven was the spoof?
