Does anyone know if Stan Sakai will be at any conventions in Illinois

Stan usually posts all conventions and other events which he attends in the NEWS forum and I add them to the Usagi Yojimbo Release/Event Schedule. So if there is nothing, then no luck ... yet

The last time I was in Illinois was about three years ago at Wizard World. There are no current plans for me to be in that area in the near future. Sorry.

My next con will be in Houston, TX at the end of March.

Hi, new to the boards, but a long time fan of Usagi Yojimbo.

I live in Australia but have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work in the US for a while. I just read about Stan's upcoming appearance in Texas, but I won't be able to get down there.

I am based in New York and was hoping there might be a comic or anime convention he might attend up here. If not, are there any other events he regualrly attends, like Wizardworld or SDCC? It would be an honour to meet him, and a rare opportunity, as I don't think he's ever made it over to Australia.

I know I will be advised to "check the Dojo", but I just thought I'd post here to make my interest known. Thanks.

I will definitely be at the San Diego con. It will be my 24th consecutive year. I don't think I'll make it to WizardWorld this year. It will be a busy summer as it is.

The closest I'll be to New York is AnimeNorth in Toronto in mid-May. Sharon and I will probably stick around a couple of days post-con to visit Niagara Falls. I'll be in San Francisco the following week (Memorial Day weekend) for the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Awards weekend.

Speaking of awards, I'm nominated for an Ursus Major Award from ConFurence. It's an anthropomorphic award given out by an anthropomorphic con. Others in the category of Best Comic Book or Strip are: Under the Lemon Tree; Kevin and Kell; Scrued; and HeroBear. I think the first three are online strips. I also received the award last year.

Excellent. Thanks for the update Mr. Sakai. I will look into heading over to San Diego in the summer. Although a trip to Canada would be cool too (especially at this time of year! - sorry, Dad joke).

I just learned the dates for the SDCC, and I think I will have left the country by then. Mr. Sakai, can you be sure to post the dates for the anime con you mentioned above, so that I might endeavour to catch you in Canada?

I remember Sergio won the Rueben a few years ago. When congratulating him at San Diego in 1997, he said he expected Scott Adams (Dilbert) to win so he left his wife at home. When he heard his name announced as the winner, he thought his wife would kill him for being left behind.

As a lifetime SF bay area resident, I recommend visiting the Cartoon Art Museum in downtown San Francisco. The current "Hate Mail" comic strip exhibit includes Berke Breathed and Frank Cho originals. The animation gallery includes a Carl Barks Mickey Mouse storyboard, three Winsor McCay cels from "Gertie the Dinosaur" and the "Sinking of the Lusitania", a Maurice Noble "What's Opera, Doc" painting, Tyrus Wong "Bambi" paintings, a Mary Blair piece, and more. There is a Hal Foster Prince Valiant on display. The curator Jenny Robb is trying to set up some events to coincide with the Reuben weekend.

Just one hour north of San Francisco, the Charles M. Schulz Museum is now open in Santa Rosa. It's a really wonderful building with many Peanuts originals, a large number of tribute pieces by other cartoonists, and a large number of historic items such as Schulz's own two Rueben Awards, Emmy's, and the Congressional gold medal.

When Sergio won the award, it was the biggest landslide in Reuben history. He was also the first "non-comic strip" person to win it.

The NCS does have a few events planned. One of them is a special reception at the Schultz Museum. Sparky Schultz was a long time NCS member.

Stan, do you know if the general public can attend any of these events?

Some cartoonists have done signings at the Cartoon Art Museum. However, I imagine it's also a big social gathering for cartoonists, especially the syndicated creaors who I think mostly work at home without face-to-face meetings as in the comic book community.

Usually these artist receptions are private affairs. As the date gets nearer the social activities will be firmed up. If there are any public activities I will post it here.
