Ok, When I saw the Last Samuri, I thought It was so great, Plus, It was about a Evin in time, I am facenated by most, The Meji Era, and the Rebellion. I thought it was great to have Tom Cruise Play, in the Movie- Along with Ken Watanabi- Which was a stunning performance by him- being in his First English Role.-

But, also , The Last Samurai, was based off of ther late move, "Shogun"- I have not seen it, but have suddently been seeing speacial Edition Box sets of the Shogun Movie all over, so, I looked in the back of the box and read that it was alot like The Last Samurai, Which made me smile haha-

Can anyone give props about Shugun? ^^ I would like to more about whats it about.

And now for Usagi Yojimbo, Dose Usagi Ever come to face the fact of the Meiji rebellion, or is he evin alive douring that time.- or later on .- Any Histroical props in the manga/Comic?

Shogun was one of the first miniseries, and is based on a not-too-bad novel by James Clavell. It's set somewhat BEFORE the Tokugawa Shogunate period (so Usagi's a wee sprout, if around at all), and is a fictionalized account of the arrival of the first Englishman in Japan. It's pretty good, for it's time (made in early '80's), And I quite recommend the full eight-hour DVD version which has some cool back-up features.

Of course, it's got Toshiro Mifune in it, so it HAS to be good :)

ohhhh

Wow I didn't know Shogun was available on DVD.... time to hit Best Buy!!! Shogun was an awesome series... much longer than Last Samurai, and in my opinion much better. It goes all over the place -- seppuku, religion, ninjas, bushido, executions, and deals with everything from lowly peasants all the way up to powerful Daimyo. The fact that Mifune plays a major role is reason enough to see it. Shogun was THE series that turned me into a fan of Feudal Japananse history...hence the handle... gotta plug the heck outta it!

Shogun is out as a five disc DVD, with the fifth loaded with special features. Well worth getting.

The story was inspired by Will Adams, the first Englishman to set foot on Japan. I read a couple of biographies on him, and he had an incredible life even before he went to Japan.

Wow....

I've just finished Samurai William by Giles Milton. The bit shown in Shogun is about 10% of the book, but it's so broad in it's scope it's hard to call it a biography-- it starts with the Spanish/Portuguese entry in Japan, and once Adams is set up on his estate there becomes more of an examination of the trading practices of the East India Company, with him occasionally sticking his head in at the factory to explain why they're not doing so well.

O.O
