Usagi Yojimbo DojoBoard

Yesterday, I went to the Cartoon Art Museum http://cartoonart.org/ and saw Stan's original art for the two-page Cut the Plum story along with it's thumbnail hanging on the wall. I almost missed it, but there's a column with two original Usagi Yojimbo puzzle pages. One is the 10 ginkyo leaves puzzle. The other features Tomoe at the top and Usagi at the bottom with about a dozen objects to find.

There's also a complete 11-page Big Johnson Bone story by Jeff Smith, a complete 6-page Irving Tripp Little Lulu story, and some excerpts of work by Lark Pien, Mo Willems, and others.

Another room features Mort Walker and his creation Beetle Bailey. A third room shows the work of Nina Paley and her fine animated feature Sita Sings the Blues.

I wanted to visit this on out trip down from Mount Shasta/Lincoln. But I think it's too out of the way tomorrow. Bummer. But that will make me try harder to get to the JAAM down south. Glad you enjoyed it! Peace, maka.

I actually got to this on Saturday. It was 4:40 and the museum closed at 5:00 p.m., so I jumped out of the car with my daughter Angela (after my partner stopped) and ran to the museum. They folks at the front desk let us in free because there was only twenty minutes left.

I looked for Mr. Sakai's art and found it. Very nice to see the water colors in person and it's always fun to see thumb names. Angela really like the find the ginkgo left art (I was surprised she didn't remember it from the comic). She really like Jeff Smith's Bone (I didn't know he used a computer to letter his comic), Larry Malder's Beanworld, and could have spent a lot more time there before we closed up. I really enjoyed the Little Lulu thumbnails. Lulu was my mom's favorite growing up.

I wish we could see more. They store was open until 5:30 but they didn't have any Usagi items for sale. Not even the plushy that I'm still missing.

Overall, it was very cool. I was bummed that we only had 20 minutes. But that was because we visited friends whom we hadn't seen for 5 years, so that was very enjoyable in a different way.
