Hey guys, thought if any of you were planning to visit DC for katsucon, you might enjoy a few of these other events/attractions in the area that weekend.

On Feb 17 (friday), the Japan America Society of Washington DC is hosting a dessert-making class. They'll be teaching participants to make dango, daifuku, and something else. I know it's a $25 cost for the admission to the class. But having taken such classes there myself, it's a lot of fun, and worth the cost. registration is available online.

Also, if anyone is looking for good japanese food in the DC area, I can recommend a few places. Off the beaten track I know a pretty good sushi place. But there is also an izakaya in DC now, Kushi Izakaya, which is pretty good (though a little more upscale).

Sharon is not traveling with me, so I'm going with my friend, Jim MacQuarrie. We're arriving Wednesday, and planning to take in the sights of DC on Thursday. We're looking forward to it, but hope it's not too cold.

I haven't been to Washington DC since Editor Diana and I did the town after an SPX many, many years ago.

A follow-up on the daifuku-making class.

Turns out I am great at making the mochi, but not so great at getting it neatly around the redbean paste core. My wife figured it out - use LOTS of cornstarch on your hands, and press the core into a blob of the mochi and then pich the mochi up and around. But not before I looked like some sort of mochi-web-fingered monster.

On the upside, it tastes just as good, no matter how it looks.
