Tmnt in Usagi
Hi, I'm Diego from Orlando, where talking animals are a way of life! I'm a TMNT fan and have heard they've appeared in some issues of Usagi Yojimbo. Can someone please let me know which ones and if they might be found in a collected edition? Also, what trade might be best for me to get into the Usagi universe? Thanks all!

Re: Tmnt in Usagi
Usagi yojimbo Book 8: Shades of Death contains the longest TMNT / Usagi cross-over story "Shades of Green" . This story was originally published in Usagi Yojimbo volume 2, issues #1-3 which was published by Mirage Press in 1993 in full color. When Dark Horse collected all the Mirage issues into book form, the stories were switched to b/w.
Usagi also appeared along side Leonardo in a couple of short stories written by Stan Sakai for the "Turtle Soup" anthology series (Turtle Soup & Rabbit Stew - 1987), and the "Shell Shock" book (The Treaty - 1989), both published by Mirage Press.
Way back in Usagi Yojimbo volume 1, issue #10, an issue which featured a fantastic drawing by Stan Sakai of Usagi and leonardo for the cover, the Usagi / Leonardo back-up story was written by Kevin Eastman and titled "The Crossing" and has never been reprinted anywhere else. This one was published by Fantagraphics Books in 1988.
I hope this helps.

Wow! Thanks for the detailed answer! I think I'll try for the original issues. It should be fun trying to track them down. I'll try the local comic shops first and then ebay. I think that 1988 issue might be a 'bear' to find!
I appreciate your help, Steve!

Re: Tmnt in Usagi
wanted to add:to get into the usagi universe is pretty easy...be aware that you might never find a way out after you have entered these rich great humble stories and beautiful artwork!!....another pretty delicate thing about usagis stories is that stan writes it in a way that you can actually start anywhere you like and not feel lost.all for this story relevant emotions, happenings, characters are neatly introduced as the story gets along while you NEVER have the moment that takes you out of the story a la 'oh this is just a little repetition here'...
but I guess book 28 called 'ronin' is an excellent starting point as it depicts how usagi was brought up and how he became a samurai in the first place...these comics mark the starting point of where usai got his own comic book, whereas before(so all of book 1s stories) were short stories(even one exciting two parter) collected from various appearances in anthologies, fanzines....
aaaaaaahh theres nothing quite like getting a good usagi book in your lap and enjoying yourself!;)
wishing you great fun!

I do have one question though. In shades of Green, Usagi and Leo talk as though they had a previous adventure together. In volume 1 they didn't do much except for kill a bunch of bandits. I'm very curious to see that adventure that they had together. Could you list what they are and where I could possibly get them? Thanks guys!

They are all listed here, except the animated cross-overs from the TMNT television series...

So Turtle Soup is in Volume one correct? What about Rabbit Stew? Sorry if I'm repeating the same questions. I'm just a big Leo fan =].

Re: Tmnt in Usagi
It would be volume 1 (1987) of Turtle Soup since the series was restarted again in 1991 (volume 2).CrimzDaReaper wrote:So Turtle Soup is in Volume one correct? What about Rabbit Stew? Sorry if I'm repeating the same questions. I'm just a big Leo fan =].
"Turtle Soup and Rabbit Stew" is a single story.

Re: Tmnt in Usagi
So when Leo and Usagi saw eachother and remembered eachother that was from Shell Shock?
Re: Tmnt in Usagi
Here's the page from the UY Wiki on the TMNT.
Two of the TMNT / UY crossover stories are reprinted in the UY Special Edition.
The third one, "The Crossing" was written and drawn by Peter Laird. As far as a know this story is only available in UY Vol. 1 #10.
