Request: 47 Ronin movie recommendation

Post by Maka »

Dear UYDers,

I have never watch any of the 47 Ronin movies. If I was to watch only one, which one would you all recommend? Why?

Thanks!

Peace, maka

I have only watched one film version of the 47 Ronin - Chushingura (1963) - directed by Hiroshi Inagaki, and it has ben a while since I even saw that.....

Chushingura (1963) on Amazon

But,

I have been watching the awesome "Daichushingura" which is also called "Epic Chushingaru" and was the 1971 taiga drama - one of the 52 episode mini-series broadcast each year on television in Japan, and which starred Toshiro Mifune as Oishi. Unfortunately, the only version with english sub-titles is a fan-subbed version being distributed only through grey-market (unauthorized) vendors. And they have only just released episodes 17 - 20 (volumes 9 and 10).

Epic Chushingaru (1971) at samuraiDVD

Oops, this wasn't actually a taiga drama, just similar in format.

Taiga drama or "Big River Drama" is the name NHK gives to the annual, year-long historical fiction television series it broadcasts in Japan. NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) is Japan's national public broadcasting organization. The name is actually trademarked to, and only used by the NHK. In 1971, the taiga drama was Haru no Sakamichi.

NHK did produce a taiga version of Chushingura in 1999 titled "Genroku Ryōran" which is also available through the less exspensive link I listed earlier....

This is the only one I've seen, I remember it being pretty good:

your opponent is always yourself."
