Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of Usagi Yojimbo!

The most amazing artists in the world have come together to celebrate thirty years of Stan Sakai’s marvelous samurai rabbit saga, Usagi Yojimbo, in a new oversized hardcover benefit book: The Sakai Project: Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of “Usagi Yojimbo”!

“It has been an absolute pleasure publishing Stan’s work over the years, and recently collaborating with him directly on 47 Ronin,” said Dark Horse’s president and founder, Mike Richardson. “With the thirtieth anniversary of his most beloved creation, Usagi, and in a time of need for Stan and his family, we are honored to publish this tribute to Stan and his work. We are donating all of the proceeds to Stan and his wife, Sharon. We hope you will join us in honoring one of the comics industry’s shining lights.”

The participating artists bring their own interpretations and their own styles to the subject, making this book a one-of-a-kind treasure.

The Sakai Project is produced in association with the Comic Art Professional Society (CAPS). All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai.

I was going to ask if there would be the possibility of having all the CAPS auction submissions put in a book, and I think enough other people had the same idea! And out just in time for San Diego...

Awesome - great idea, and kudos to Dark Horse for packaging all the art to add more proceeds to the Sakais. Great to see the industry and fans come together like this.

Not all the auction items will be included in the book. Many pieces have nothing to do with Usagi at all. One guy in Switzerland sent in 40 pieces from his collection, including prime Roy Krenkel sketches and a Steranko drawing. Others have donated Usagi with other established characters, and, though we may attempt to get permission from the trademark holders, may not be included. Still others are fan-type drawings, a few traced over my own art, and will not be included. Even with the remaining excellent pieces, I don't know how many will be in the book because of page count limitations. I'm glad I'm not going to be picking out the images for the book.

This will be an impressive release for Usagi's 30th.

And there will be one more 30th anniversary item that will be premiered at Comic-con.

Could it be the previously postponed Usagi Yojimbo Watercolor Sketchbook?

Or maybe a new Usagi Yojimbo Color Special collecting all the recent Usagi Yojimbo short stories that have been published in color?

Or possibly even a Stan Sakai Travel Diary collecting all of Stan's travel reports, with photos, and including the sequential stories "France", "Norway", "Granada", etc.....

An UY Color Special is already in the works. I sent in my cover to it about a week ago. Brendan is editing this one, but I'm not sure when this is scheduled to be released.

There is no chance of the watercolor sketchbook because of the texture of the watercolor paper I had been using is difficult to smooth out. Too bad there is no sketchbooks with 4-ply bristol. I guess I can make one.

I don't think there is enough interest in my travel diary. Sergio's, on the other hand, would be snapped up in a New York minute.

I know I would be very happy about a sakai's travel book(maybe even with some usagi sketches from the various places?)...sergio's I imagine would be a treasure to read about;)hahah, he seems to have been EVERYWHERE in the world doing EVERYTHING only imaginable at least once;)..he MUST be 200 years old at least to cover up all the adventures that so far only have been hinted on here and there;)hahaha...but I am very excited for this book as well as the yet unnamed secret project;)

I've got a few people asking about the book... now that SDCC is over, where will it be available to purchase from?

I got my copy from "my" comic-book-shop Stray ...eh... Black Dog Comics in Berlin. Seemed to be no problems, to order it (internationally).

Got my copy...nice to see how other artists 'see' Usagi. So many interesting interpretations.

Is this book sold out already? Amazon and TFAW both seem to be out of it. I got a copy, but I'd like to be able to point anyone who wants to help support Stan and Sharon to where they can buy a copy.
