CAPS had an artists signing at Frank and Sons Collectible Show today. I had seen an announcement on Facebook and decided to attend.

The artists were...
Stan Sakai pg 1
Tone Rodriguez pg 6
Aidan Casserly pg 21
Wil Panganiban pg 23
Benton Jew pg 26
Chad Frye pg 30
Mark Dos Santos pg 41
Anson Jew pg 64
Jeff Keane pg 86
Ruben Procopio pg 95
Steven Gordon pg 95
Scott Shaw! pg 97
Jonathan Marks pg 109
Mike Kunkel pg 117
Ricardo Delgado pg 150

Here are some pictures from the event...

My copy of the book, which I got through my local comic book shop - Comics Unlimited.
I guess there was a bit of a mess-up and Frank & Sons did not have any books for sale. So lucky I had mine already. Others weren't so lucky...

Besides the signing of the Sakai Project, I was able to have Stan sign my HC copy of Red Scorpion, and the color special...

... as well as get a signed copy of Senso #1 ...

In non-Usagi related news, I got a sketch of a Mosasaur from Ricardo Delgado and the fee for the sketch went directly to Stan! :P How awesome of Ricardo to do that!

Looks like you had an awesome time there.

On days like this, it really sucks living in Michigan!

Can you give any more details on the book plates? How much did they cost?

I wish I had know in advance that they would have something like that, I would have tried to arrange for someone to attend for me. I don't think my finances this month could have squeezed out enough for another copy of the Sakai Project (I ordered three through my local comic shop), but a multi-signed book plate would have been a cool addition to the copy of The Sakai Project which I already have.

They do have another round of these autograph sessions scheduled, so I guess I might still have a chance (depending on the cost, of course)..... :)

Steve, my bad... I didn't even think of getting extra bookplates.

They were charging $15 for them. I grabbed one early and went around and got it signed. Otherwise they were being passed along the table to be signed by each artist.

I read on the CAPS FB page today that another event will be held August 16. Depending on where it is I may try to attend, but I don't know if they will have bookplates there also. Today's plates are labeled as being from Frank & Sons. There may be a chance there were left overs. I try to look into it. A co-workers brother has a stall there.

Wow, awesome you got an advanced copy of senso! Is it as awesome as I imagine it to be? I can't wait to pick it up this Wednesday. If you find anymore bookplates please include me. I'd like to purchase one myself. Thanks.

Thanks for posting these pics. I would love one of those bookplates. What a great idea.

Anyone on Facebook try to contact these guys? I tried last week through their webpage and they never replied.

It'd be nice if CAPS took some extras to sell on eBay. If there were any.

Speaking of CAPS on Ebay, they have a few items up for sale currently, including that awesome wine bottle by Karlton Hahn....

Was the $15 for the bookplates on top of the $15 to get your book signed? I paid the $15 to get my book signed but they didn't give me a bookplate. Also, it seems I missed out on Jeff Keane. I got there around 11:30 or so and he wasn't there signing and I didn't see him around 2:00 when I dropped by again after walking the floor of the rest of the show.

On the plus side, Stan was kind enough to sketch Gen in book 2 of Fantagraphics' Usagi Yojimbo: The Special Edition (he sketched Usagi in book 1 at Comic Con). I also picked up Aidan Casserly's Scapula Vol 1 (about the world's worst villain) and Wil Panganiban gave me a free copy of Frank & Steinway. I had a fantastic time talking with the artists and looking at their other works. Hopefully I can get a few more signatures at the August 16th event (which I hear will be much more conveniently located for those of us in Hollywood).

I bought a copy of Frank & Steinway for my daughter and she loved it.

I like those book plates too. Unfortunately, I am volunteering at a retreat during the next signing. Fortunately, I just got an email about the Long Beach Comic Con. A few artist from The Sakai Project are going to be there at the end of Sept. So I to make that and finally start getting some signatures. :)

The Sakai Project is beautiful. I am so happy to own it. I bought another copy for some family friends and they love it too. What an awesome art book to celebrate Usagi's 30th anniversary. CAPS, Tone, Bill, Dark Horse and all the other folks who made this book happen are awesome. A big thank you to them all.

Peace, maka

From what I saw, the guys at Frank & Sons were very unorganized. The people I spoke to just seemed to make answers on the fly. I went expecting a much more organized event. The $15 I paid for was for a bookplate. From my understanding you could buy one signed or unsigned & get it signed yourself. Same price for either one. There were 150 numbered plates. I picked #59 since that's the year I was born... I had the artists sign both the bookplate and my book. I think if you had a book you could have just gotten it signed without paying anything - at least that was the impression I got.

I heard someone say Jeff Keane would be leaving early. He was still around when I left at 12 noon. I think there were supposed to be 2 other artists there. Either I missed Stephen Silver or he got there after I left. I read Brad Rader's FB page and he said he couldn't find parking in the designated area and after three tries he left.

Stephen Silver did arrive late. Too bad with Brad Rader, they did have reserved parking for the artists at 10am.

The $15 charge was for a bookplate OR getting your book signed, not both.

I believe that the bookplates were in charge by a comic book dealer at Frank and Son, not CAPS.

There are bookplates available, but currently I don't know how to connect that dealer.

The next CAPS event is supposed to be at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood, Ca.

I'm not associated with any of these events,

John H.

As John said, the signing plates were handled by a guy from Frank & Son. They have just been put up on eBay, but for much more than they were asking for at the event.

The next and last group signing will be at Melt Down Comics in Hollywood on the 16th. Details are not set yet, but I will post it here or on a separate thread. Sergio, Mark, and Bill Morrison are tentatively committed to going to that one.

Thanks for the updates and further info John & Stan.

I inquired with CAPS this morning about the bookplates and they said they were looking into it & if they have some available they'll announce it on their FB page.
From what Stan just said, that looks like it might not happen.

Can someone identify the signatures I have in the colored rectangles?

My guesses are:

Red - Anson Jew
Yellow - Benton Jew
Teal - Jonathon Marks

Maichan doesn't have Stephen Silver listed as attending, but I think he's on the plate I received. Top left under Stan.

Your guesses are correct. I verified all the signatures, as they match the ones in my Sakai Project book.
