My Hunt for "Shades of Death"

Thought I'd share my most recent hunting experience....

Elsewhere in the Dojo, while some of us were listing our signed and numbered hardcovers I decided to give eBay and Amazon another try in order to locate any of the few remaining books that are still on my wanted list.

By chance I spotted a HC of book 8, Shades of Death, for a reasonable price. However the seller did not list the book's number or supply a photo of the actual book so I emailed the seller through Amazon's contact page. I asked about the condition, if it had a cover and what the book's number was. In the automated reply I received, the seller advertised prompt replies within 1 to 2 days. I waited about 3 or 4 days and hadn't heard back so I tried searching for the seller and found a phone number, so I called them. Apparently the seller has a number of stores, and I was referred to another branch. I called the other store and they said they had the book, but it wasn't a hardcover, it was a TPB. I thought "bummer". Oh well, the hunt continues. That is until I received an email reply the next day via the original Amazon email contact. In this email, they stated they had the book, it was in good condition with the dust jacket, and provided the number of the book. That was good enough for me so I placed my order, and less than a week later the book arrived in my mailbox today. Good things shall come to those who wait. :P

Thanks for the comments guys. It's always a rush to secure another HC. :D

I know I'll eventually get the last 4 books that I am missing. It might take me a while, but I am sure that I can do it, and hopefully within my budget.

BTW, I've passed up several books in the past that didn't have dust covers.

Yup, I agree, if you're going to do it, do it right! :D

Do a lot of the h/c get sold without dust covers then? I've barely ever seen them without...

From my personal experience, which is infrequent, I've noticed most all books I've seen on eBay have their dust covers, but out of the books I've seen on Amazon or from online book sellers, several that I was after were listed without dust covers... not a lot, but enough that when I first saw the book listed I was excited, then when I read the description, I was disappointed.

I've also seen some books listed as Library Editions. I've never seen one of these in person. I thought I read once that they were hardcovers, but different in some way? Not that I'm interested in having one, but does anyone have one, or has seen one, and can explain exactly what they are or how they differ.

I bought a used hardcover library edition for one of the volumes.

I bought all 29 volumes in trade editions for the kids and I to "read to death" and beat up and spill food on, etc and not have to worry about (and, not surprising, this has fortunately and unfortunately happened--fortunately b/c they are being constantly read for the past year and unfortunately b/c they are falling apart!). Anyways, they are just in a solid, almost plastic-type hardcover without any special inserts/plates/signatures.

They are pretty much bombproof but otherwise just like the TBP editions.

I got curious enough to order the first two Usagi books, Ronin & Samurai, with the library binding. As described, they were just like their tpb counterparts except that they were rebound with a hardcover version of the same cover that is usually on the tpb version. No dust jacket, tip-in plate or embossed cover with either.

Here is a previous message about one of the two books......
