What do you have on "your" bookshelves?

Post by Steve Hubbell »

I decided it was time to rearrange my book shelves in anticipation of a bunch of new books coming out later this year. :D

Book Shelf One:

Image
My shelf full of Usagi Yojimbo comics, being guarded by Sam Moo Rai, still has room for more issues. :D

Image
Another shelf of comics, mainly foreign issues and comics with Usagi short stories or cover art by Stan Sakai. Also a couple cool foreign magazines.

Image
More magazines as well as some over-sized books, some issues of Previews, some convention souvenir books, etc....

Book Shelf Two:

Image
The shelf with my Usagi Yojimbo s/n ltd edition hardcovers (you can even see how beat up the dust jacket of Book 1 is) and a Shi book by Billy Tucci

Image
left - right: Swedish (2), Portuguese (3), Indonesian (1), Polish (22), Dark Horse (3), Croatian (9)

Image
left - right: Portuguese (3), Polish (7), Italian (10), Hungarian (12), Dark Horse (4), Fantagraphics (14)

Image
The omnibus editions, as well as a couple Paw Print library editions

Book Shelf Three

Image
The digest size French editions from Paquet, including the newly acquired tribute book (thanks Maka)

Image
The Spanish editions from Planeta DeAgostini, and the Spanish sketchbook and the watch

Image
Last, but not lease, the Czech editions from Crew.....

Nice. Where are all the statues?

Do you have a separate Groo area?

My bookshelf isn't nearly as impressive as yours. I have ten shelves overflowing with books, but only 3/4 of one dedicated to Usagi, though I expect that to keep growing.

Image

Starting from the right, I've got my: Fantagraphics HC set; UY Saga Book 1; UY Saga Book 2; then all the trades with Yokai stuck in there by chronological release date; next to those is Space Usagi TPB; the 2013 Baltimore Comic Con yearbook feat. Usagi; The Sakai Project; Art of Usagi Yojimbo softcover; 47 Ronin; Nilson Groundthumper; and then a few random comics (color specials, Stan's Star Wars, Witcher, and Rocket Raccoon covers); and finally some random publications (SDCC guidebook, etc.). Stacked on top of my TPB collection are (bottom to top): Vol 21 library edition; the TPB's that got displaced by the Saga hardcovers, and the plastic wrapped bundle is the pile of stuff Stan donated for the trivia giveaway, so that pile will start to shrink shortly.

For non-Usagi stuff on this shelf, I've got a couple comics by Joe Matt and Daniel Clowes, along with just about every book put out by a guy named Jason (if you want to check out Jason's stuff, I highly recommend "Hey, Wait..." to get you started).

Shelf 1: Lots of collectibles, mostly Funko Pops and action figures. I also have Batman and Robin banks from the 60s TV show.

Shelf 2: Lego shelf.

Shelf 3: Single Issues. Mostly DC, like Batgirl, Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, etc.

Shelf 4: Graphic Novels. Once again, mostly DC. Some Marvel like Spidergirl and Ms. Marvel.

Big Box: This is were I keep most of my comics actually. I don't have many Usagi books, which I am trying to remedy. This is where I usually put my new single issues.

I wish Funko would have made an Usagi for the TMNT line. I think Hellboy (Dark Horse) had a Funko figure.

Yeah, my UY collection is more similar to yours, one shelf that is slowly growing. I have the majority of the DH UY trades (all paperback), I'm missing copies of Book 3 and Book 5, the rest of my Fantagraphics copies are paperback as well. I have the two Saga editions so far, the Art of UY book, the Sakai Project, Yokai, 47 Ronin, and the Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper. As for Stan's individual work, I have a copy of his Rocketeer story, his Star Wars variant, and a Grendel trade with his Hunter Rose story.

My UY shelf resides above my shelf devoted to Japanese/samurai history, books ranging from samurai histories to modern books on kenjutsu, kendo, and iaido to manuals on bladesmithing to art books devoted to the beauty and artistry of samurai weapons and armors.

A most impressive collection though Steve, very, very nice. :D

The display case in which the statues reside is a pain to photograph.....

The shelves with my Groo books and comics are in the other room.....

Image
This is the current home of most of my Groo comics. I am thinking that I should have enough room on this shelf for the complete Groo: Friends and Foes series, as well as the Groo vs Conan series which still needs to be put away.

Image
Some more Groo and Sergio Aragones stuff, as well as some Mouse Guard material.

Image
Some Madman, The Goon, and other miscellaneous comics that I have picked up over the years.....

The Manga shelf

Image
Koike and Kojima were definitely my favorite manga creators. The Dark Horse sets of Lone Wolf & Cub, Samurai Executioner, and Path of the Assassin (missing volume 15 still).

Image
The First Comics series of Lone Wolf & Cub, Legend of Kamui, the discontinued Satsuma Gishiden from Dark Horse, some Japanese editions of the New Lone Wolf & Cub, and finally some Legend of Kamui comics from Eclipse.

Image
The New Lone Wolf & Cub from Dark Horse and original Lone Wolf & Cub in Japanese (thanks Maka). Also a French edition of Tako by Michetz (thanks Fanfan).

I really need to dust that top shelf, seems to be collecting some cobwebs under the window sill.

Well, it looks like Fantagraphics is releasing their two-volume special edition as a paperback version that runs about $50 and would include Book 3 and 5: http://amzn.com/1606998870

I've always been interested in Japanese culture, probably because my father lived in Japan a couple years (before I was born) and so we had lots of Japanese art on the walls, would occasionally eat homemade traditional Japanese food with chopsticks, and generally had a bunch of Japanese knickknacks lying around the house. Also growing up, my family was always hosting Japanese exchange students in our home, so there was a lot of fairly direct Japanese influence on me at a young age. In the fifth grade, I was assigned a big project about samurai where I had to do a lot of research. It was during this time of study that I really grew to appreciate the samurai history and older Japanese culture.

Speaking of books, I'm currently reading The Lone Samurai: The Life of Miyamoto Musashi by William Scott Wilson. I knew a little bit about Musashi beforehand and have watched Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy (loosely based on Miyamoto Musashi), so it's been fun learning a more complete story about the man. I only have one other book on the subject of Japan, but I'm keen on exploring more.

Very nice collections guys, love 'em!
I keep most of comics at my parents place, because I have to move on a regular basis for work, and it would be a pain to move my comic collection every time: Last time I counted, I had a bit over 1000 comics (mostly mangas and french editions hard-cover, like Tintin and Astérix). I'll try to take some pictures next time I visit them, but I don't have nearly as many Usagi books and goodies as you guys.

It's nice to see & read about what everyone has on the shelves!

I see Usagi-chan has LEGO! Awesome! I have LEGO too..... too many LEGO! haha...

Steve, you really must have one of the most complete and assorted Usagi Yojimbo collections - well done! :D
The foreign language editions are a little out of my league, but I think it's 'cool' that you collect them.

I need to update my photo of my UY shelf ~ here is a portion of it from back in 2011... TPB only.

More photos of my shelf to be forthcoming... :P

You can find some incredible comic related collections over at Comic Book Resources. I think there's 17 pages of Shelf Porn to look at. Last time I looked through them there were a couple of people with Usagi statues and some books, but nothing like what Steve or Mayhem have.

Steve's got way more books than me heh, but that's because he has a ton of foreign editions. I just have all the regular hardcovers and every individual Usagi issue. Plus Albedo and Critters. And the statues. And the Art Of book, and Sakai Project.

I just meant collections in general. I remember you having a ton of art. Probably up there with Wily Pueo and John H.
