The Artist Within

Post by Stan Sakai »

Dark Horse will be publishing a book of photographs by Greg Preston this summer, titled The Artist Within. For the past 20 years, Greg has been photographing cartoonists, artists, and animators in their studios. My photograph is about 15 years old, taken in my old studio--before we remodeled our house.

It's a beautiful and fascinating look at cartoonists and their work environments. Some like to work in clutter, others prefer a more pristine work space. Alex Toth refused to be photographed in his studio at all, demanding that one, and only one, picture be taken on his front porch with a disposable camera. Some creators, like Kirby and Eisner, have already passed on.

I'm really looking forward to this book, and not just because I'm supposed to be in it. It should be out in time for San Diego, so it's a good book to collect autographs in as well.

:D Wow! So it would be like pictures from behind the sceens. Thats awsomeness. So it would be like what we would see in like, DVD's of releases like "Bambi" and "Dumbo" the Photographs like that of the Artists at work :P Thats so cool!- Acctually, I would think by just "looking" at the Photos, you could get a grand idea of how the artists animated the charactors like the black birds and Timithey mouse in Dumbo. XD Ahhh, outstanding stuff. I hope it comes out in time for the con too.

Kind of reminds me of a book I have called The Faces of Fantasy by Patti Perret. The Artist Within has the added angle of trying to capturing the artist in their studios.....

Tor Books; 1st edition (October 1, 1996). Travelling across two continents to capture in The Faces of Fantasy over 100 major fantasy writers, including Terry Brooks, Ursula Le Guin, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Fred Saberhagen, C.J. Cherryh, Mercedes Lackey, Steven Brust, Bruce Coville, Terry Goodkind, Joyce Carol Oates, Peter Straub, Jane Yolen, Anne McCaffrey, Terry Pratchett, and many more. There is also a volume devoted to science fiction writers.

It will be interesting to see a "new" picture of Stan from fifteen years ago.

Abayo....
