Cowabunga, samurai

Post by Stan Sakai »

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 5 DVD from the original animated series is out. Included in the 12 episodes are the two that Usagi guest starred in: Usagi Yojimbo and Usagi Come Home.

It even comes in a neat lenticular box.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not really a Turtles fan, but the Usagi appearances might be neat to have/collect. Are these the only Usagi cartoon appearances anywhere?

Those are the only two episodes I can't watch anymore. While the Turtles are what got me into Usagi in the first place (much thanks to Peter and Kevin for that!), I can't stand to see Usagi reduced to a tired (and highly inaccurate) archtype. Other than the fact that he's from feudal Japan, I see no resemblance. Heck, he's even attacking the Shogun's men in his first on-screen appearance.

Usagi and the TMNT

Post by go »

Hello Readers,
Watching these episodes today reminds me of my son watching them when he was a child (now he is 25). I also remember all of the conversations when the cartoon aired about the shortcomings of the cartoons. However, I really enjoyed watching today, the crude beginnings of animating Usagi and loved Krang's lines. If you enjoy the TMNT, you might like this for $10 usa. Sensei Sakai is correct about the lenticular lens packaging being fun.

Nice! Not a big enough turtle fan to buy the whole thing, but it's certainly worth renting!

I found the answer to my own question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usagi_Yoji ... ppearances

Apologies for my noob query. I didn't see the answer here on usagiyojimbo.com, but maybe I just didn't look in the right place.

Good call Schroeder. Most of the info on Usagi's TV appearance is buried beneath the 1000s of posts here on the DojoBoard and never presented formally on the website. Ever since the DojoBoard was first introduced, it has slowly become the utlimate source for Usagi-related info. I estimate that about 60% of the Dojo's Usagi info is actually contained within the Board itself, including the old archived board.

In fact, there's quite a bit of info within the pages of the DojoBoard that appears here exclusively and was never formally reproduced on the website itself. One of the many things that happen when a website becomes too big to handle! It's gotten so bad that in some cases I've reduced myself to simply linking to the specific post from the main website whenever something really noteworthy pops up.

Fortunately there are other places like Wikipedia that capture a lot of the info that tends to get buried here. But we're improving....slowly!

By the way, I harshly criticized the French dubbing of Usagi in these two episodes (http://www.usagiyojimbo.com/forum/viewt ... 7&start=15)

I recently saw them in original version and... well, the French dubbing is quite faithful, actually. :) Has it changed in the newer TMNT series ?

I remember those episodes. They've aged pretty badly, of course, but they're still a hoot and a half. I recall a scene where Usagi is running across a busy street in NYC (just after being teleported out of his own dimension), and in a moment that's meant to be one of those subliminal "safety lessons" that were usually found in 80's cartoons for kids, Leonardo calls to Usagi: "Look out! Be careful! Look both ways!"

I wonder what might have happened if Usagi had taken Leonardo's advice too literally.

"Look both ways, Leonardo-san? Like this?"
"Yes, that's right! I - NO, USAGI, DON'T STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!! DON'T - "

Screeeeeeeeeech! CRUNCH!!

"Uh oh."
