I was poking around and entered "Stan Sakai" instead of "Usagi" on eBay. There is an original sketch Fallen Son cover available. I can't afford it, but maybe some lucky person out there can.

It's one of those blank-cover Captain America comic that Sergio and I did a lot of free sketches on at Motor City. We both regretted doing them, and I refused to sketch on those at San Diego.

You might remember that it was immediately after Motor City that I severely cut back on free sketching, and Sergio stopped altogether.

I know they're just trying to hype their sale, but I don't think I've done enough to achieve "legendary" status. I remember what Sergio (who is older than I am) said when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame: "But that's an old man's award!"

Oh wow!!! I really love that sketch! I am extremely tempted, I have Jei on one shoulder telling me buy it now!!! and Usagi on the other don't do it ! this guy is profiting off someone's generosity. What to do ?

Looks like Mr. Sakai took care of the link though. It's a great piece!

Also, I am getting the feeling that it is considered rude to sell sketches on eBay. Is that frowned upon? I personally would hold onto a piece forever but there seem to be some debate. It looks as though the seller has a half dozen Fallen Son sketches by various artists. One is Sergio.

Strange that it didn't show up when I searched for it... I can't explain that one. Or it's a shop only item and didn't show up in the normal listings.

Anyways... regarding reselling art, in general anything you've already paid for (commissions, covers etc) is fine. Anything gained for free such as these sketches is considered not.

If you pay for a sketch or artwork its fair game, display it sell it whatever. The point is you paid for a service or commodity from the artist. It used to be a free sketch was done for and much appreciated by true fans. Unfortunately EBay has created an environment where a large percentage of these sketches end up being scalped for money. The point is the artist is taking time to make something for a supposed fan who is actually just a freebie sketch pirate. Most of these sketches are bought by fans but by purchasing them your actually supporting this unscrupulous behavior. Darn I guess I talked myself out of buying it but it sure is cool!

Good lord, these people are impious vultures. I would never even ask for a sketch in the first place, because, as the article says, they have to do work and they don't get paid for it. I just find it to be rude to even ask for one. But to do so and then alter it to sell it? THAT is low.

If anyone happens to notice this Comicman182 guy selling something again, we should pass his name around. Maybe create an ebay account and just run all his auctions through the roof so they either get cancelled on he gets buried in ebay fees from an item that won't be paid for. It would be the least he would deserve.

That is a pretty shady thing to do.

I used to have this art teacher in grade school who would take my drawings and sketch on them to show me how a technique was used and it was absolutely horrifying to me. It was no longer mine after that. What a thing to do?!

I can see the issue being that on one side you want to be able to trust your fans but on the other there exists that level of fandom that is more interested in monetary value rather than artistic value (or personal responsibility). It shows a complete lack of respect and dignity to have your work altered and then sold.

So now I am clearer on the debate. There really is none.

I hate to see a good thing go away. It's like, nice people have to not be so- nice anymore because of people taking advantage if that....shame really....but if it stops the "art theft and alteration"- if people really care- they'll stop.....

That's nauseating in and of itself, and when considered next to the anecdotes by Vess and others, even more distressing.

OOOO MEN!!! Why this people sell his free sketches WHY!!!??? I dream to have from Stan a sketch and they go to Comic-con or Motorcity-con and get a free sketch from Stan and they selll it!!! mm...i now they want money but its a free sketch they cant sell it the artist put their best whishes to the person they made it and they just sell it!!!
I see the same history with Matt Groening free sketches on ebay.....
