So, in the chapter you just posted a link to, what was it that Tomoe really hated being called? Was it the "flower" comment that offended her?

Tomoe is referred to by many as "The Flower of the Nation"

She takes some offense at that, as she doesn't appreciate being 'plucked'.

She is further offended by Yasuhira, as he insinuated that her honour has been co-opted by the Shogun. Whereupon she nearly slew her guest for that affront.

Cooler heads prevailed.

I understand Tomoe's disdain for the idea of being "plucked" or for the idea of the whole thing with the shogun, but that does seem like an overreaction.

Remember only yesterday (albeit a few chapters ago) Hane made Tomoe question the very nature of her soul when she gets married.

Now, Yasu begins to question the very nature of being a samurai in the climate of the times. He even hints that it's not even a worth while endeavour, as the risk of being turned away from a Lord is very great.

It's one thing to become a Ronin if your lord is killed, like Usagi. It's a whole other matter to be turned away cuz you cost too much. And Tomoe confessed to Noriyuki that is what she feared the most, to be turned out and alone.

Add to all that spiritual quandary, Yusu further insinuated that her honour now belongs to the Shogun. Worse than being plucked, Tomoe's honour was bought!

Put all together, that would make any samurai a bit...jumpy.

She's still single.

You know, I hope that in the actual series, Horikawa gets actual development and depth. So far, he's appearing like the steriotypical trecherous advisor. Remember when he suggested to Noriyuki that he do nothing to try to help Tomoe? This makes me think he was hoping that she would get infected with the plague and die.

Horikawa does have a significant role to play in my series.

He's taken rather low, but then pulls himself back up again.
