Comix by Kids #1 is now in print! Last year I selected the 24 best comic strips by my fifth grade students and had them printed in a comic by Ka-blam. Here are a few of the pages from this comic.

In other news, our author/artist visit this year will be James Warhola. He is a fantastic illustrator of children's books. My favorite book of his is "Uncle Andy's" -- a story about what it was like for him as a kid to visit his uncle, Andy Warhol.

I am working on my dissertation to earn a doctorate in Curriculum & Teaching. My thesis will be "Using Comics to Teach Violence Prevention to Elementary School Students". We're starting with reading the Linus and Lucy episodes from Peanuts. She was a real bully! Also, does anyone remember Goofus and Gallant from Highlights magazine? We are reading comics like these and using them to discuss right and wrong approaches to handling conflict. Students are then making their own comics with these themes.

Here's some of our first efforts at these: http://lbartroom.blogspot.com/2009/11/b ... bully.html

I'm just getting started, but open to suggestions to other source material and ideas!
