Sad news...

I especially like his John Carter of Mars artwork (some is a little on the NSFW side, I'll let you seek the other pieces out yourself):

When I read this news, I immediately heard the score for Conan the Barbarian in my head:

The Funeral Pyre - Conan the Barbarian Theme (Basil Poledouris)

This is very sad news. Frazetta was and still is one of my idols. He inspired me to become an artist. I'm disappointed that I never got to meet him.

Sad day indeed.

That is very sad news, indeed. He was an inspiration to me. The National Cartoonists Society had an outing to his farm a few years ago, but I was not able to go because of scheduling conflicts. I never met the man.

A little story about Frazetta's work: my Dad has never been much of a reader. Now that he's getting a little older he's started cracking open a book or two (much to me and my Mom's delight), but as a youngin' and a high school jock he only read The Lord of the Rings and the Conan The Barbarian paperbacks with the Frazetta covers - the later, he told me, he got soley for the awesome paintings on the covers. Those covers were very inspirational to him as he ended up becoming a body builder in his early adulthood.

So a few weeks ago I found this crummy (in a good way) hole-in-the-wall used bookstore in the "hippie" section of town and discovered they had all the Frazetta Conan books. I brought my Dad there the next day and he bought all of them - he was smiling like a kid on Christmas morning! He asked if I wanted anything, and I picked out an old paperback copy of one of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman books... which also just happened to have an awesome Frazetta cover!

Rest in peace.

I'm bummed I never got to meet Frazetta. His paintings certainly ignited my interest in fantasy novels as a kid.

Someone on another message board I read posted a link to this gallery of comic book covers and movie posters and other stuff by Frank Frazetta:

I had forgotten that Frazetta was briefly a contributor to MAD Magazine. I wonder if Sergio ever met him.
