I just got a Playstation 3 that plays BluRay and got this yesterday:

The picture quality is amazing for such an old film.

Anyone have BluRay?

I am not so jealous! I have quite a large collection of DVDs and I cannot afford to re-collect all of my titles on the more expensive Blueray format!! The machines are expensive as well!! Plus I still have a tube television and cannot afford to upgrade at this time!

I hope that Blueray tanks!!!

Sorry,but,I'm a little peeved at Blueray.I think that it's aimed at "video-philes" who can afford home theaters.Big flat-screened t.v.'s and the like.I feel that it's going to alienate alot of consumers! Heck...you need codes to even play some of these new discs! That sucks!!

Congrats! It's a move my wife and I have been talking about making, ourselves, but first we need a bigger TV.

That's the same box art for the DVD release of Yojimbo/Sanjuro. Did they re-remaster it, or did they put the same restoration on Blu-Ray?

Sorry you feel so strongly about this. A few points to consider, though:

1. The price of Blu-ray players has come down considerably. Most only cost what DVD players were going for ten years ago.

2. Blu-ray players still play regular DVDs, so you don't need to upgrade your entire collection at all. When you get a new player (if ever), just start buying Blu-ray instead of DVD and then go back and upgrade any films that you want to see in better quality.

3. Who's making you go out and buy one? Keep your tube TV and DVD player for as long as you want. Eventually, they'll stop making new DVDs, but that's to be expected of any media format after almost fifteen years. By 2025, Blu-Ray will be on the way out, too. As technology keeps bringing us better ways to enjoy our media, the demand for older formats inevitably wavers. I adore LP records more than most people out there, but I'm not about to protest itunes. It's a much more practical medium.

Ponyo is another Blu-Ray I would recommend. I hope more Miyazaki films make it to Blu-Ray soon.

Trust me guys, once you go BluRay (with the right TV and audio) you'll never go back to DVD. BluRay is simply amazing, especially comparing it with your old DVDs. It's almost like watching a movie how it's meant to be watched...it's had to describe, but the picture quality is so clear that you can see Mifune's pimples. Haha.

I've actually sold off most of my DVD collection to convert to BluRay.

Yes, it's been remastered/restored. The sound and picture quality is amazing. To paraphrase the booklet included in this: thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed, while small dirt and grain, along with noise reduction, were cleaned up using a DVNR system. It also includes the behind the scenes stuff as well.

It really depends on the Blu Ray. Avatar, while not the most quality of films, looks absolutely unbelievable on the format compared to normal DVD.

I like Blu-Ray, but I'm not getting rid of my DVD collection anytime soon. Right now, I only feel a need to "upgrade" to Blu-Ray if it's a movie that's a particular favorite and one of those that's really a visual stunner like, say, Blade Runner.

There have been Blu-Ray discs I've watched that blew me away visually, but there have been others that were a little disappointing. For example, I didn't really think that the Blu-Ray of Gojira (the first Godzilla movie) was a big improvement over the DVD (someone on another message board I read says that there's a better Gojira Blu-Ray available in Japan).

Criterion is putting out lots of good stuff on Blu-Ray. I recently watched For All Mankind on Blu-Ray, and it may be the closest most of us ever get to visiting the moon. I hope that Kwaidan is something that plan to release on Blu-Ray since I'm sure it would look amazing:

Yes, but the restored DVD version that came in that packaging was also restored and had a booklet about the restoration. I'm asking if you know whether or not it's been restored again since the DVD restoration. If we played my DVD restored version side-by-side with your Blu-ray restored version, would we see a difference?

I also have the DVD version and I'll play them side by side, I'm sure the BluRay quality is much more enhanced.

No need to go that far. Just compare copyrights

It's also possible that when they did the restoration, they optimized it for Blu-Ray, but also released a scaled down version for DVD at the same time.

I've read quite a few comments from various places by numerous people interested in Japanese cinema concerning Japanese DVD quality and how the Japanese studios always seem to market inferior quality versions of their films for international distribution.

Speaking of Godzilla, the funny this is that it was Godzilla 2000's coming out on DVD several months before the vhs was avaliable that inspired the 12 year old me to think "hey, I've gotta get a DVD player."

I don't have a Blu-Ray now, but in two or three years when the new American Godzilla comes out I'm sure we'll see tons of Blu-Rays on the market and I think then I'll convert. I always hop on the technology it's best to watch Godzilla movies with.
