New Fan, Saying Konnichiwa.

Post by locustofdeath »

Hello everyone,

I'm new to Usagi Yojimbo - though I'm ashamed to admit that I should have been a fan a long time ago.

Being a lifelong fan of both the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Groo, I've been well-aware of Usagi for years. Why I never took the time to "discover" the Ronin Rabbit, I couldn't tell you...thankfully, about a month ago I stayed a weekend with an old friend who had a stack of Usagi Yojimbo comics in the spare room I slept in! I couldn't resist; I practically devoured those comics in a single night. What struck me is how charming and FUN the comic is. The stories have wonderful depth, but they are not always overly serious or GRIM the way most of today's comics are. This was such fresh and invigorating reading that I felt 10-year-old me again, discovering comics for the first time. Upon returning home, ordered every collection or back issue I could find.

Better late than never. I'm in the fold for good, now.

I found out about this forum after reading Todd Bustillo's writeup in issue 94. My favorite comics are TMNT, Groo, Cerebus and Bone - and now Usagi Yojimbo!

Welcome to Usagi Yojimbo! And to the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo Forum as well.

A lot of people discover Usagi through his association with the TMNTs over the years. And a lot of people find Usagi due to Stan Sakai's membership in the Groo Crew and his participation in the creation of Groo the wanderer. And of course, some people seek out Usagi due to his (and Stan's) contribution to the creator-owned comic movement.

It sounds to me, from your taste in comics, like you were destined to read Usagi Yojimbo! :D

welcome to the dojo!I agree with sensei sakai here, your list of favourite comics sounds nice to my ears;)....have you read all of cerebus if I may ask?
you will find out that our favourite rabbit ronin is on a little hiatus at the moment, but don't worry, he'll be back in due time.in the meantime we are waiting for the annual usagi yojimbo sketchbook(#9 this year) which you can either get through the dojo(look for the thread) or by atending a convention to which stan is invited.the other time which we all are looking forward to is the mini series about the 47 ronin which stan will be drawing and mike richardson is writing it.one of the creators of lone wolf and cup is also on board, so this should be an incredible comic adventure to come.sorry for not naming the co-creator of lone wolf and cup here, I have a hard time remembering his name;)...
well, that'll be it for now, oh-have a GREAT time here, amigo!
greetings

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

I've breezed through all of the Usagi books and comics I have so quickly that I'm not enjoying a second, slower reread. I couldn't honestly say why I waited so long to give the series a try, but it was Lone Wolf & Cub that sort of drew me into the whole "Samurai Ethos" that I'm now enjoying. A local bookshop had the volumes for a dollar a book, so I bought almost the entire series on a whim. As I've gotten into LW&C - comics and films - Kurosawa, ect, and wanted more, I remembered Usagi Yojimbo. Of course it didn't hurt that I'm into similar comics titles!

coolray85 - Yes, I have read all of Cerebus! Not as the comics were coming out, because there were a few years where I'd given up comics reading, but I've long since caught up. I love the series and really admire Dave Sim - not that I agree with all of his points of view, but I admire his honesty and willingness to bare his soul, all while taking a "silly animal book" to heights at times profound.

Thanks, Stan! I look forward to hopefully seeing you (and Sergio Aragones, and Kevin Eastman) at the San Diego Comic Con!
