Help me name my character

Post by Randy Clute »

I am working on a book this summer, but I can not decide the name for the main character. He is a bear, and he lives in the forest with his friends. He has a slight southern accent, he's not overly intelligent, but he is very kind. I am not sure what genre the story is, I guess just "funny animal" or whatever Pogo was classified as. The first story is about him and his friends dealing with a gorilla that is pestering them. I have written the whole book, but still need a name for him.

Possible names I have thought of include:
Ryan
Bomza
Nollie
Nalle
Woodley
Bib

Anyway, since (hopefully) y'all would be my target audience, I was wondering what name would appeal to you the most. "_____ the Brown Bear"
Feel free to submit names and we will see if we can come to a general consensus as to what fits him best.

From your list, I'd also choose Woodley.

But, going with "_______ the Brown Bear" I'd suggest any number of "B" names....

Bart
Bob
Brian
Bartleby.... oops, someone else is using that one.....
Bentley
Bogart
Braun
Brawn
Beauregard
Billy
Buddy

After a quick google search for southern men's names, a couple that caught my eye were Buford and Rufus, followed by Rhett and Grady.... of course, there is always Boris the (brown) Bear.

Thank you for the feedback. I have decided to go with Woodley for 2 reasons: 1. You guys liked it, and 2. I realized it works as a sorr of homage to one of my all time favorite artists, Wally Wood.

Thank you again!

Okay, I see you already decided. But that would have been my vote anyway. :D

After doing research I found out that Ryan and Boris were taken, and I think Bartleby was the name of the bear in "Kiddies Christian Comics" put out by Archie.

I was surprised at how many people liked Woodley, but after I made the connection with Wally Wood, I knew it was perfect. Also, if I ever do get published with any projects, I will be sure to give all of you the royal treatment if you ever visit me at conventions.

Regarding the name Bartleby, I was actually referring to the young rat creature befriended by the Bone brothers. :D

Yeah, Boris the Bear was a comic in the 80s... in fact, the first issue featured a TMNT cameo heh... that Kevin and Peter found... amusing...

10 years from now, when you will have won several Eisner awards and there will be thousands of people waiting in line for your signature, I will have this very message printed on a laminated card and use it to skip the line.
