Today, during a conversation on what country produces the best comics, my friend had mentioned a recent Dutch poll where people were asked to pick the ten best graphic novels. Four North American comics were on the list, and a work by Jacques Tardi (I don't know if that's spelled correctly.) about war was number one.

My friend is a big fan of this artist, and would very much like to know what this comic is called. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of information to work with. He said the title starts with "La Gare" (My French is atrocious, so phonetically, it would sound like the first syllable of "garrison.")

If you could help, it would be very much appreciated.

Jacques Tardi is a specialist of nice, black-and-white engagé comics, with an detailed historical background. I especially recommand his series "Le cri du peuple", which is about the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and the Commune of Paris.

Do you know if there is an English version of C'était la guerre des tranchées?

I did not see an English language edition listed, but that does not mean there might not be one. The only two places I've looked have been Amazon.fr and Amazon.com, I never tried a google search for the artist or title.
