What about Tim Burton's "Nightmare before Christmas"? I think it's fitting both seasons.....and it's funny while still suitable for children (but not the ones who believe in Santa Claus, I'm afraid)

Do many people in Europe really care about Halloween, or is it mainly just a U.S. thing? I get the impression that it's the latter.

I can only talk about Germany, where Halloween is not a major issue; few kids dress up and go around for "Trick or treat" and I don't think they are greeted with much enthusiasm.
Here. it's mainly a commercial thing, but it seems to replace our more traditional "St. Martins-Singen" (in memory of St. Martin who is said to have shared his coat with a poor man) as one of the recognized days of celebration in Autumn.

Halloween has started to be a commercial event a few years ago, but is not very important anymore here.
Unfortunately St Nicolas has quite disapperared too (it was an "alternative of christmas" in the north and east of France), the classical day of the dead when you must go to the graves of the family too(1st november) is not so important too, and the day where everyone disguise "Mardi Gras" is almost not celebrated anymore...

I want Halloween to become a big deal in Japan so people will make lots of cool Yokai costumes.

If I was going to be a Yokai for halloween, I think I would make a Tengu costume (it might be difficult to find a good mask):



An Oni costume would be cool too, but it might be a little more difficult.

Talking about difficulties: walking with these stilt-like shoes would be pretty hard, too!
