John Woo's RED CLIFF

Post by Jet_Jaguar »

I was just wondering if anyone else here has seen John Woo's newest movie, Red Cliff. I just watched the full 4 1/2 hour (approximate) version, and I would highly recommend it. If that running time scares you off, there's a shorter version that cuts about two hours, but I can't imagine it having nearly the same impact as the longer version, and I was really surprised by how fast the long version seemed to zip by.

If you have any kind of soft spot for "cast of thousands and three 2nd Unit directors listed in the opening credits" historical epics, this one will become a fixture in your DVD/Blu-Ray collection. It's a welcome comeback for John Woo after a mostly disappointing Hollywood career and possibly the best film he's ever directed. If you're anything like me, you'll have the theme music from this movie running through your head for days afterward:

UCSB had a screening on April 2 (the shorter version) but I couldn't make it. I plugged it in my class. I hope to watch it someday on our small TV and regular DVD player. :) Hopefully my local library picks it up soon.

Meanwhile, I checked out from the library The Criterion Collection's Akira Kurosawa's Red Beard. I hope to watch it early this week.

Peace, maka

Konichiwa! I picked up this film recently( only the shorter version was available) and I really liked it! I wonder what the 4 & a half hour one is really like? I also picked up a film called "Three Kingdoms". It's pretty good too. It has Hong Kong veteran Sammo Hung in it. It's worth a look!

Abayo! :D

If you have a Nintendo Wii or something else that streams Netflix Instant movies to your tv, you can watch the theatrical cut of this movie on Netflix Instant (I've still only seen the long version):
