The Kaname Ishi (rock) is at the Katori Temple in Chiba Prefecture. It pins down the Earthquake fish to keep it from thrashing, and setting off earthquakes. It is a really small stone, considering the job it does. Here is a photo of it:

In some parts of the country, it was believed that earthquakes were caused by a giant underground beetle.

Interesting, I'd never heard of that before, only the earthquake fish.
