New Japanese Samurai Movie Out!!!

Post by Akahige »

:D Just saw a very well made movie called "Twilight Samurai", directed by Yoji Yamada, released here in the U.S. by Empire Pictures. It's here at the local art movie house for a week and will be showing for week-long runs at houses across the country. It's the story of a very low-ranking samurai who's a widower trying to raise his two daughters. It takes place at the end of the Tokugawa Period. Very quiet, low-key movie, more about people than swordfights, although there two good ones in the movie. Check it out if it's in your area!

Sure, rub it in... You get to see all the good new movies while I'm stuck here in Michigan where "The Last Samurai" barely got shown, and you have to go and tell me how good the movies I can't see are...

Seriously, I posted a review from the San Francisco chronicles on the forum here a little while back for this same movie. I am glad you were able catch it and enjoyed it. The description in the review made it sound interesting and enjoyable.

Well, you may just be in luck, o Michigander (Michigoose?)! Here's the website for the scheduled runs of the movie throughout the country over the next couple of months, dates and theatres. Maybe one won't be too far from you!

Oops! Can't get it to link from here. But just type the whole thing in as shown and you'll get to the page. Enjoy!

Two showings in Ann Arbor, if I recall the information correctly. Enjoy!

After it's nomination at this year's Oscars, I got a copy of it on DVD from CDJapan. Very good actually... mostly plot and a bit of action... but the action is good although it isn't very long :P

Yeah, "Samurai Fiction" was a pretty cool move, very fun. I thought I would dislike it, but was very pleasantly surprised. Lots of good performances, cool music... dang it! Now I'm going to have to watch it again. :)

"Twilight Samurai"... what can I say about it other than everyone should see it. It is not a blood soaked movie, it is much more about characters and their relations. There are two fights in it, and they are VERY well done. Plus it has Hiroyuki Sanada, one of my favorite actors. I was bummed when it didn't win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

I ran across the page with the list of locations where the film was to be shown right after I posted my reply concerning the film and went back and edited in the address to the sight at the bottom of my posting.

Unfortunately, Ann Arbor, Three Oaks (?), and Detroit are all southeast Michigan and I'm in the southwest part, so we are talkin' a couple hours each way for a movie :? ... But it is supposed to be a good movie

The descriptions of Twilight Samurai that I've read remind me a bit of the Toshiro Mifune film Samurai Rebellion in it's depiction of everyday life for a lower ranking samurai family.

I don't know at this point, I mght go see it at the theatre, or I might just special order it on DVD  ...

Michigander
Wouldn't that be Michi no Gachou? And who would name a street that anyway?
