Building a Dojo

Post by Firdes »

Had anyone in here ever been inside a real Dojo, I mean like a Dojo made all out of wood. I was wondering if anyone would know any sites where it shows you how to build one.

I spent 3 years training in a dojo, that myself and about 15 other students helped our Sensei build from scratch. We took the 4th floor of an old warehouse and transformed into a beautiful dojo under his supervision. We had one huge open floor space for training, two changing rooms, two offices and a community room.

Things to think about: Hardwood floors with plenty of open space and the higher the ceilings the better. You'll need to construct a Kamiza (sp?) as well at the front of the dojo. (That's sort of the focal point of the room. Very altar-like. We had a large framed photo of Morehi Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido there.)

Not sure if there are any directions on line for buildinga dojo though.

My friend's bedroom has a section completley dojo'ed out. the area around his bed has all the wood and what not, and he has pictures of the 4th Kawanakajima, between his favorite general Takeda Shingen, and mine, Uesugi Kenshin. NAGAO ALL THE WAY!!! eat it cavalry.
