Before this man's films became the elixir of life for an entire generation of anime fans, he first found fame with this famous manga, later his first masterpiece.
"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" by Hayao Miyazaki.
Yes, before it was a legendary film, this science fiction masterpiece was a barouqe, ingenious, epic 7-volume manga that was originally serialized in Animage.
It took Miyazaki 12 years to finish this work, and the result is breath taking, containg detailed maps, posters, and amazing art work and writing, this has the mark of Miyazaki's talent.
For those of you who don't know anything about Nausicaa (all 12 of you), here is the basic story....
It's the distant future of earth. After a horrific war, the population has been driven back to basics, forced to live in small kingdoms while trying to avoiod the 'sea of corruption', a poisonous fungal forest that is slowly replacing the eco-system of old. It gives birth to intelligent insects, known
as Ohmu, as well as poisonous spores that have a corrosive effect on human lungs.
The main heroine is Nausicaa, daughter of the king and heir to the throne of the Valley of the Wind. An eccentric but beautiful girl, she is deeply in touch with nature and......well....I don't want to give it all away. It's published in English by Viz, so go buy it!
In a nutshell, this work is the Lord of the Rings of manga. A truly epic and underrated experience that.....ah, heck with it, just read it!
