Known as Jungle Emperor Leo in Japan, this cute little critter has been entertaining Japanese children for almost 50 years.....
....and yet, almost nobody in America has ever heard of him!
For those of you who don't know, Jungle Emperor Leo (aka Kimba) originally started out as a manga by Osamu Tezuka. It was his first major success as a manga artist and launched him into fame and fortune.
It tells the story of Leo (Kimba), a young albino lion cub who is born while in the circus, after is father his killed by his aunt and his mother captured and forced into show business. It chronicles his entire life, from his birth to his death.
The most infamous thing about Kimba is that it was COMPLETELY PLAGARIZED by Disney to create The Lion King. If you don't believe me, just look around on the net.
Becuause of his rather obscure existence in manga and anime otaku-dom, the manga has yet to be translated into english, but from what I've seen, it bears the charm of Tezuka's pen.
If you have any comments, please, speak up!
sincerely,
Angelcake

Heard of it but never seen it
(england usually gets everything last for some unknow reason)
Have you or anyone heard of an old anime film called Flower Girl? or Heidi girl of the mountains (made in the 70's or 80's)? it was the 1st anime film i ever saw as a kid and sadly lost the video i had it one and i doesnt seem to exist in any of the anime archives (except maybe heidi girl of the mountains (made by Miyazaki + co)
All I remember from it was a blonde girl living in Switzerland with her grandfather, she had a cat and dog who only spoke to her. There were 2 villans, a tall think woman and a short fat man who had an umbrella (he opens it vertically to hid behind, when he closes it he has different clothes on). A train station is shown often too. Out of the rest of it i only remember the ending, the cat and dog are really angels in disguise and Heidi has to marry the boy she likes (who is really a prince) in heaven, but she gets cold feet and runs off to the flower fields she loves.
Anyone else heard of this film? It made no sence what so ever but it was beautifully drawn.

The Kimba anime was broadcasted in Spain many years ago, even before The Lion King, although I didn't like it at all at the time (maybe because I caught the story at the half of the series, or because of the horrible Catalan dubbing.) The manga is still unpublished, because there has been a war between publishers to get the rights of Tezuka's works. Once it's published here I'll probably check it out.
As for Miyazaki's works: as far as I recall, all the series that he's worked in (Lupin the Third, Heidi, Marco, and Conan; all of these are the Spanish names and I don't know if the Japanese or English names are the same) have been broadcasted as well. Both Heidi and Marco were so popular back in the day that there have been many rereleases in VHS and DVD (I think there's currently one being sold now in newstands), and many parental associations praise them as "the best series for kids for their values of friendship, love and blah blah blah". The funny thing is that the same guys that say this are also the ones who attack the rest of manga and anime because "it's too violent and our kids shouldn't watch it because we believe they are too dumb to make their own decissions and we should put a moral policy on everything"
. Both Heidi and Marco are based in novels, although I cannot remember the name of the book on which Marco is based on.
I wish they played Conan again on TV; it was a really cool series about a futuristic apocaliptic world a la Waterworld, but it was broadcasted only once and it's unlikely that it'll ever get released in DVD here. Another series Miyazaki had something to do with was Sherlock Hound, an adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes novels but with anthropomorphic animals instead. I loved that show

....comes back from digging the internet....
'Kay, I think Marco was called Haha wo tazunete sanzen ri and is based on an Italian tale called "From the Apennines to the Andes", in which a boy called Marco begins a journey from Italy to South America (I think it was to Argentina, but I'm not sure) in search of his mother. It was a really sad series, but very succesful.
Heidi was broadcasted here for the first time in 1975 (!) and I even found a pretty good dedicated Japanese website. I also found a website in English dedicated to the original novel by Johanna Spyri.
