Happy Girls' Day

Post by Stan Sakai »

March 3 is the traditional Girls' Day in Japan (Hinamatsuri). It is also Dolls' Day on which a family would display their figures of the Emperor's court along with white sake', mochi (rice cakes), and peach blossoms.

Heh... it seems that your search for meaningful dates for the UY2004 calendar has made you an expert in a new field :D

What does "figures of the Emperor's court" mean? Do Japanese have little figurines of their Emperor at home? Like photos of the President?

Happy Birthday

Post by 4NT »

Happy Birthday Fortune Cookie! My birthday is tomorrow. Anything interesting happening on March 4th Stan? :o

Stan,
Thanks as always for the intersting tidbits of culture that you share with us, especially the mixture of Japanese/English dialogue you put in your comics.
My girlfriend was practicing making sushi the other day. She thought I was bilingual throwing all of those Japanese terms out at her (Kaiso, Nori, etc). :D
I was more excited about the Kaiso farming story (one of my favs) than she was. Oh well..

These are generic figures that represent the Imperial Court. They can be very detailed or very stylized. Sizes range from a few inches tall on up. A collection can also range from just figures of the Emperor and Empress, to a set with hundreds of characters--other nobility, samurai, servants, etc. We were in the doll district of Tokyo near Asakusa a few years ago, and there are a lot of stores that specialize in these figures. They are also sold in department stores. The neatest one I saw was a set comprised of Peanuts characters, with Snoopy and Woodstock as the Emperor and Empress.

Not that I know of offhand. But March 6 is Utsu-ue Matsuri, the Ox Festival.

Consider yourself lucky that you weren't born later in the month or you might have shared your birthday with the "Giant Penis Festival". This is, of course, a fertility festival for families as well as for bountiful crops.
