It sounds like there's a good chance that Criterion is going to do a new a Blu-Ray/DVD release of Ishiro Honda's Gojira. I really hope so since Criterion's DVDs and Blu-Rays editions of classic Japanese films are always great.

There's already a Gojira Blu-Ray released by another company, but I found it to be a bit disappointing. I'll be happy to replace it with the Criterion edition if/when one comes along. Thinking about what a properly restored Gojira would look like in HD makes me salivate a little.

^It's not just Gojira, Criterion found a 35mm Fine Grain Print of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! too. Both movies will no doubt look amazing when released.

I'm excited!

SYNOPSIS: Godzilla is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama made in Japan at a time when the country was still reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning more than twenty sequels. This first thrilling, tactile spectacle continues to be a cult phenomenon; here, we present the original, 1954 Japanese version, along with Godzilla, King of the Monsters, the 1956 American reworking starring Raymond Burr.
