How many Issues of Usagi Yojimbo would you normilly see at your local comic store?...I recently bought #95, but was suprised that there was only 2 issuses there, and no other issues was in stock....Is this normal for comics to run out fast?...I was wondering

"Ich wundere mich wie weit es ist zu sonne wenn du ihr entgegen rennst."
maybe I should do that too- I hardly see any Usagi- and its never much in order--- Or the comic guy dont order enough...He really should cense hes the Only comic guy in town....I dont eantto have to resort to online shopping XD

My store was only carrying two copies a month before I got there. I got on a pull list and then converted my friend to Usagi (he now has a pull list), so I effectively doubled the store's ordering per month, but it's still way too low.
In my experience, stores that buy small numbers of comics like Usagi, which are revered by fans but not known by most of the mainstream, create a self-fulfilling prophecy. If it's not on the shelf, no one can pull it down and give it a try. I love my shop dearly, but he's overly conservative on independent publisher numbers to a fault. He won't even order any copies of Uncle Scrooge except for people that have it on the pull list. He's got a particularly bad issue from six years ago sitting on the shelf!

Comic book story rant :)
Hello Ya'll,
At my local comic book store I usually see about 4-5 copies of UY out on the shelf. I have no idea how many others have UY in their pull (that wouldn't show up on the shelf). They also have about 7 or so UY graphic novels. I have also bought UY figures they had. I special ordered my two Dark Horse UY t-shirts and the latest UY limited edition GN from them as well (so they do special orders).
Before I started my pull again I missed an issue (maybe #87), so I assume they sold out of that issue. Their back issue bin has one copy of most issues of the UY dark horse Vol 3, but they also have a few FG and Mirage issues.
This store has been around for a while (At least before 1990, I think). They have moved location twice. They changed their name to "Metro Entertainment" from a Metro Comics. In the past 10 years or so they have been inviting mostly TV folks/actors from Simpsons to Buffy to do signings. They used to invite more comic book folks (James Robinson, Scott McCloud, Art Adams, Trina Robbins, Mike Allred, Brent Anderson, the Hernandez brothers, etc. Mr. Sakai even came up once (I was out of town
). I know Mr. Sakai donated a UY sketch for flooding relief auction this store put on back in the early 90's. I bid on it, but it went for $75+ and that was beyond my means at the time. I ended up getting a Barbie splash page by Trina Robbins for $20 instead.), but I think the TV stars bring more bang for their buck. This store also highly promotes CCG games and warcraft gaming events every weekend and some nights. I wouldn't be surprised if those games make up 30% or more of their income. And they have a ton of graphic novels (these must be the bread and butter of comic book stores). I think it must be very difficult to run a profitable comic book store.
They also donate a lot of graphic novels to the downtown library (including some UY).
I love comic book stores. If you order a lot of comics, you can get them cheaper through mail order. But I have to hand it to my comic book store, running your own business is very difficult. They still give back to the community (they put together a small comic book flea market in the city community center, dontate comics to library, provide a place for young gamers to hang out and play, and every year they donate comics for our church auction. I'm sure they must give to other organizations as well.). I often fantasize that I could run a comic store business, but I know I’m fooling myself. So I live vicariously through them and give them my hard earned buck.
Peace,
maka

Yes, I heartly agree;estee wrote:Get yourself a pull-list.
Your comic shop guy will put aside all of the books you collect. Its easier for everybody and you wont miss an issue.
here is my story to show you, how convenient a pull-list will be (or rather, how inconvenient not having one could be...)
I live in Berlin, Germany and was content to collect and read the TPB, until I stumbled over and into this great Dojo;

Whow, they were discussing issue 97 already, know about the covers of issues 98 to 102 including...
While I was glad to have TPB 20, which collects issues 76 to 82 ...

Well, I knew the TPBs would have to be a little behind, but 15 issues!! That's more than a year, man; wars could be declared, fought, and lost in that time..

OK, the solution to this was obvious: I had a little talk with the owner of my favorite comic shop and he ordered issues 83 to 97; and, being the patient guy I am, I uncomplainingly waited for two weeks for the shipment to arrive

Then, just yesterday, they arrived!!

I have to admit, I prefer to read UY chronologically; so, before devouring them brainlessly, I sat down and solemnly sorted the issues...
Hm, 83 to 88; the story arc ends with 89....

Hmm, 90; the last issue of a two-part story-line...

Hmmm, 97; again,the last issue of a two-part story-line...

The only issues I could read were issues 92 and 95!!! The rest of that whole bunch of UY comics had to be locked away until the issues filling the gaps would eventually arrive !!! AAAArrrrrggggghhhhh!!!

You see, even when you are patient like a spider (or like me...

Greetings from overseas

Thank you for your concern; I still feel a little sorry for myself, but worse things happen at sea, you know?!Steve Hubbell wrote:Sorry to hear about your missing issues, Thomas.

I do think so; if Dark Horse is able to deliver them...Steve Hubbell wrote:Will your comic shop be able to find those missing issues for you?
Otherwise you'll all hear me complain about it; my little daughter sometimes threatens me: "I'll sit here and scream for ever, if I don't get....!" Maybe I should try that trick in my comic shop and/or this forum...

And I'm sure from what I've heard, that he would have not only brought them, but would have added some nice little sketch as well, kind man that he is...Steve Hubbell wrote:If only you had known which issues you were missing a couple days earlier, before Stan left for Europe, because he could have most likely brought those few issues along for you.
But that's ok, I'll get to see him in Paris next Saturday (which is more then I thought possible until last month), I'll bring my favorite TPB and the Art book along for a signature (and possibly a little extra, we'll see), plus there's a slim chance of sharing a (soft) drink and a dinner with Sensei, which is definitly more than I ever expected possible...

Wow, we must have had the same realisation at around the same time. I too have been buying up issues from after TPB 20 to the current issue. I didn't want to be so far behind either!Thomas Froehling wrote: That's more than a year, man; wars could be declared, fought, and lost in that time..![]()

There's 3 comic shops in my city. One of them gets 6 issues and had 5 regular buyers until I came along and made it 6. Another comic shop gets UY each time it comes out but I never see it on the back issue racks, so they must get in just enough to satisfy the regulars. They did however give a whole heap of recent issues away at FCBD. I'm assuming that the third comic shop does the same.
It sure is a pity that my local comic shops only get in just enough to satisfy regular readers...

I asked Thomas to visit the French Usagi Yojimbo Dojo you have set up, and to register for the forum there, since he IS planning a trip to France. (I think I fixed the bug so Babelfish should translate it correctly from German now)Fanfan wrote:On parle de moi ?
You have new links to fan art on your site? Cool! I will have to go and check them out.

heh, translators are fun.
I remember translating something from english, to spanish, to french, then back to english THEN into russian and sending it to my friend leonid, who would then recoil in horror because the translation has come alive and is eating random children in the neighborhood.
okay... it's not that bad, but it's still weird
