Who Reads Usagi Yojimbo?

Post by Steve Hubbell »

One of the neat things I have discovered about the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo Facebook page is that it automatically compiles demographic data on the people who "like" the page (among other graphs, charts, and data they provide). There are currently 1079 people who like the page.

I went to Facebook, changed my setting to give it a try, and was lost after 5 minutes. Guess I'm not cut out to be a Pirate.

There should be more female fans. So many great women characters in the book.

It's crazy that Usagi never had much of a following in Japan. I guess they're just more into manga?

Well, I think it has more to do with the simple fact that American comics in general have never had much of a readership in Japan (aside from manga adaptations of Marvel stuff and things like that).

I started reading "Usagi Yojimbo" sometime in March 2011, and I still think it's a great comic book series to read. :D

I'm surprised over the numbers for 13-17 age group. Since Usagi is a great all-ages book, I'd think those numbers would be higher.

I think reading has a lot more competition with all the differant types of games, as well as movies & television, and other activities for that age group than for other age groups.

I agree. And the fact that there are not so many comic book stores around probably also makes a difference. I'd also venture to guess that most kids that might read Usagi Yojimbo do so because a parent does. The typical kid probably doesn't have a chance of even being introduced to Usagi until a later age. Neighborhood comic book stores need to make a comeback... but who knows, maybe digital comics will be a salvation for comic books and younger readers?
