Basking in the afterglow of a fine meal, Usagi is amazed to find that
someone else has picked his tab. His curiosity changes to outright rage when
he finds that Gennosuke is his would-be benefactor.
Usagi, still fuming about being left with a fifty ryo bill the last
time the two met, is ready to kill Gen until the latter somehow manages to
calm him and offers a new 'get rich quick' scheme.
Gen tells Usagi of a band of thieves that have stolen a statue of
Kwannon from a nearby temple. Gen offers to do all the work, distracting
the bandits at their hideout while Usagi steals in and retrieves the
statue.
They approach the hideout from different directions, and Usagi, while
waiting for Gen's distraction, thinks that perhaps Gen is not so bad
after all. No sooner has the though crossed his mind, when a green persimmon
from the tree above hits him on the head. The bandits alerted by the noise
attack him en masse, while Gen steals in and retrieves the statue.
When finally Usagi arrives back at the inn, he is in a somewhat vexed
state. Gen tells him to blame the persimmon tree, and this is all well and
good - however Usagi had been under a pine tree at the time. The only
persimmon tree in the area was where Gen had been. Gen run's for the
hills with Usagi two steps behind, sword poised.
One week later the reward money arrives. Usagi leaves immediately, not
looking back. Gen laments what a nice, if somewhat strange guy Usagi is
as the innkeeper approaches him. When Gennosuke finds that Usagi has left
him with the rest of his bill - fifty ryo - Gen finds other adjectives to
describe his long eared friend.
