The story begins with a couple running through the forest. It is apparent
they are running away from someone. Soon they are caught in a net trap and
hanging from a tree. Their pursuers are revealed to be neko ninjas, and the
couple also are neko ninja who were trying to escape the ninja life.
The runaways, Take and Saruko, are brought before Chizu, the ninja chief, by
her second in command Kagemaru. Kagemaru relates the couple's attempt to
escape and states the their law is clear on what their punishment should
be-death! Chizu listens to Take and Saruko, and Saruko is able to touch a
nerve within Chizu regarding love. Chizu countermands Kagemaru's order to
execute the couple, despite his insistence that not executing them would be
detrimental to the "interests of the clan!" Chizu orders to couple to leave
before she changes her mind.
A short time later, on a mountain pass, Take and Saruko are confronted by
Kagemaru and a group of neko ninja. Kagemaru explains he convinced Chizu of
the error of her decision, and now he is take their heads at Chizu's orders.
After a fierce battle, Take is slain but Saruko escapes, surviving a long fall
through the forest below the pass. With revenge in her eyes, she mutters the
name "Chizu."
