Usagi rests at a country inn to enjoy some tea and kibi
dango (millet cake). When he treats a small boy to a kibi dango,
he unwittingly ends up giving an entire orphanage a treat of kibi
dango. When the matron invites him to stay at the orphanage for
dinner, Usagi accepts, and adapts the classic children's story of
Momotaro (Peach Boy) to entertain the orphans.
Born from a peach and raised by an old samurai and his wife,
Momo-Usagi-Taro undertakes the perilous journey to Oni Island
(Ogre Island) to rid the land of rampaging ogres. Along the way,
he meets and befriends a dog, a monkey and a pheasant who have
heard of his quest, and shares his parents' parting gift of
nippon ichi no kibi dango with them.
When his tale is done, Usagi takes his leave of the matron
and the orphans, and nearly runs into a pretty young woman as he
turns a corner.
