Usagi, fully recovered from Jei's spear-thrust, undertakes a
journey to a nearby town to collect the bounty on the bandit
Hosoku for Gen. As he travels, he meets a noble young samurai,
Donbori Chiaki, whose father Donbori Matsuo served with Usagi
under Lord Mifune. They travel together for a time, exchanging
stories of Chiaki's father Matsuo, who is thought to have died at
the Battle of Adachigahara Plain. Eventually, they must part
ways, but not before Chiaki nearly falls to bandits: unable to
reach in him time, Usagi witnesses a maimed stranger's courageous
defense of the young samurai. Usagi strikes down a bandit who
would have killed the stranger, and learns of the self-sacrifice
behind the young samurai's quest.
